Brilliant photos as usual! We are booked to go to Lydford fieldtrip with Devon BC on Sunday so thanks to you I know they'll have emerged!Glad there are already more than a dozen out at Luckett!

Hi Wurzel, I live in Cornwall & know Essex Buzzard anyway......Small Pearls are fairly common still here in Cornwall especially round the coast! The should start emerging in about maybe 10 days time & then keep going until 2nd week of June. There are many places to see them in Cornwall. Try...

29th April!!! Must be a full month earlier than last year!! We had just 1 Glanville at Wheelers Bay on about 28th or 29th May last year (2013) & they were just coming out then!!

We had 48 sightings of about 30 different Pearl-bordered Frits at Murrayton nr. Looe this afternoon(19th April)!! 1 of the female Pearls was egglaying too....1 egg on underside of Dog Violet leaf and 1 laid on underside of a Celedine leaf right next to a Dog Violet plant. Dingy Skipper butterfly. As with most British species they were out late last year (2013) due to the very cold Spring.

Angle Shades or Silver 'Y' ?? Just a hunch as I had these larvae in my greenhouse on Geraniums in Cornwall earlier last year!

I also have a Small Tortoiseshell butterfly hibernating in my garage right next to a similarly hibernating Herald Moth! Only time I've seen a butterfly alive on 1st January even though it is hibernating.
I'm at Par in Cornwall.

Clouded Yellows do from time to time overwinter down here in 'mild' Cornwall especially at Seaton (near Looe). One seen yesterday (30th November) still going strong & 3 Red Admirals there too on same visit by Leon Truscott from Torpoint (Cornwall's Moth recorder). I did report this on November ...

Let me guess Maximus............Wheelers Bay Glanvilles? Was the earliest place to see them this year at end of May (just starting to emerge) & we drew a complete blank at Compton Bay up til the 3rd June!!! What a wierd spring & early summer & fantastic summer!! :D
