Whether to worry about the weather?
I'm slightly worried so perhaps someone can help put my mind at rest...or at least answer a couple of questions... We've just had a very warm week, warm compared to usual temperatures at this time of year, and now the weather people are telling us that things will be getting back to normal - cooler,...

Re: New Biology Section
I don't know how helpful this would be but I came across an oldish book at my parents house that has some useful stuff about scale structure, genetics, mimicry etc..The book is "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Butterfly World by Paul Smart, published by Book Club Associates by agreement wit...

Re: Planning For Spring
I agree with Bill, I went to Martin Down on the 23rd May and got photos of both Grizzled and Dingy Skipper, Green Hairstreak, Small Blue and I saw a Duke of Burgundy and couldn't photograph it in time in time. All where the path from the Sillen's Lane car park meets Borkerly Ditch. Another visit on ...

Hoorah for Shipton Bellinger!
I was meaning to get to Shipton Bellinger last year but I kept putting it off, and this year was heading the same way until today I bit the bullet and found my way over there. I followed the path up the hill and was just debating which of the two paths to follow when a female Brown Hairstreak popped...

Re: Monarch sighting!
Allo Pete I've been a birdwatcher for many years now and have been on one or two "twitches" to see unusual brids that have turned up where they shouldn't be. Twitchers are so named because the nervous anticipation of seeing or not seeing the bird manifests itself as ticks and twitches. Is ...

Re: Can't find number 40!
Allo Paul Painted Ladies have been scarce this year, I saw only my second of the year in my garden this afternoon (along with a very fresh looking Small Tortoise). If you are still trying for Brown Hairstreak then Shipton Bellinger is supposed to be quite reliable -if you fancy a bit of a drive to t...

Re: Blues underside wings.
Alright there I have only been photographing butterflies for a year but I have been having some success at identification using "British and Irish Butterflies" by Andrew Riley. It goes into great detail looking at similar species but I start looking at the background colour of the wing, wh...

Queries from a beginner?
Allo there I've only been photographing butterflies for a year now and on my stores I've come across a few unusual forms and also one or two that I could do with checking. Hopefully you guys will be able to help me confirm or deny their identify... First up is a female Common Blue - is this the form...
Re: Raptor
The underwing is very pale, in female and juvenile Hen Harriers there are several bars with darker wing tips. Male Hen Harriers have pale under wings with dark tips, but the back and tail are too brown for it to be this. Also the wings don't look long and thin enough for it to be a Harrier. The defi...

Re: Wiltshire insects (must be, its the BBC!)
Allo I'm new here! Snails are indeed Gastropods, this is their class and along with Cephalopods, Bivalves and 4 other classes make the Phylum Mollusca . Also the Spider is slightly unusal in that it too isn't an insect (a very common misconception) but is an Arachnid, belonging to the Phylum Chelice...
