Re: September 2011 competition

Why not judge it on an average rating but only for those photographs that receive, say, 15 or more appraisals? whereas the poorer ones will equally be more likely to be ignored. Ah, that's why I've never entered the photo comp's cheers for clearing that up for me Dave  Have a goodun Wurzel

Re: Common Blue - Favourite Photo of 2011

This was taken at Cholderton Rare Breeds Farm and I liked it as it was taken during a stolen moment. The girls were busy making "sand angels" and running round the field blowing raspberries at the goats and cheering at the piglets. So I nipped off to a little overgrown area, an oasis in a ...

Re: Dingy Skipper - Favourite Photo of 2011

This was taken at Hod Hill near the back entrance very early in the year and during a purple patch where I enconutered Common Blue, Brown Argus, Small Copper, GV White, Marsh Fritillary, Small Heath, Grizzled Skipper, Speckled Wood and this little chappy within 10 minutes. It made up for the 2 hours...

Re: Dark Green Fritillary - Favourite Photo of 2011

This was taken at Martin Down at the Blandford Road end and I just couldn't belive the numbers of them. There were four in the car park before I even go out of the car! By the time I got to the hollow I was a little bemused as there had been one on almost every flower and I didn't know where to begi...

Re: Help please!

Sorry Nick  I'm not much good with names although I did think that I was okay at reading - but by making that particular faux pas it suggests that perhaps I'm not as good as I thought  :D Cheers Dave and Dave - in the field I generally use the size difference first, then a look at the un...

I was looking through something I'm working on and got a sudden panic about the butterflies shown below. Can I get confirmaiton that they are all Brown Argus - I probably checked their underwings at the time which is why I thought they were but as it's been almost 6 weeks since I saw my last Argus d...

Re: Comma - Favourite Photo of 2011

I was struggling to choose which was my favourite Comma shot for this year due to the quantity of sightings that Ive had - allmost every trip out has meant me seeing Comma - has it been a good year for them? In the end I remembered this shot taken on a visit to my in-laws in Ffosyffin. We went for a...

Re: Clouded Yellow - Favourite Photo of 2011

I went to Alners Gorse for the first time this year (in August) and after some stunning views of both male and female Brown Hairstreak the little beauty below showed up as a total surprise! It allowed me to get right up in it's grill and just sat there while I clicked away. I honestly didn't think I...

Re: Wurzel

Alright Nick (?) - no worries about the lens - I did give it go but there were a couple of problems I couldn't get round - not getting as close as I'm used too and the fact that it didn't have image stabilization/vibration reduction. In no way did I find what you wrote misleading, in fact I'm glad t...

Re: Thinking on sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 ex dg macro

I bought this lens a couple of weeks ago and have been struggling to get the best from it. I haven't got a tripod (the quick release mount it stuck to my scope) but I have managed to get a couple of good shots - although I've thrown a lot more away with this lens than with my previous. At the 300mm ...

Re: Wurzel

I took advantage of the fantastic weather over the weekend and also the fact that Lottie is over Chicken Pox (she was insisting she was "baby dragon chicken" for a short while but is now back to being just "baby dragon") to take the family to Stourhead. It was looking like it was...

Re: Chalkhill Blue - Favourite Photo of 2011

Some cracking open wings shots there! My favourites (again I'm greedy) were both taken at Stockbridge Down on 10th August. The butterflies were everywhere, much more numerous than at my usual site of Martin Down, and they fluttered up with every footstep! One pair didn't move though, and after I too...

Re: Brown Hairstreak - Favourite Photo of 2011

I'm going to apologise in advance as I couldn't make up my mind which photo was my favourite. First up was a splendid male taken at Shipton Bellinger on 31st July. I wasn't having any luck when I bumped into Clive and Shirley who proceeded to show me bush where they'd seen one earlier and he was sti...

Re: Brown Argus - Favourite Photo of 2011

Indeed I looked in every garden centre I came too and never found one! :D The fave Brown Argus from collection this year was this one taken at "Five Rivers". 143 - Copy.JPG Nowt special but I was out enjoying the summer weather with my girls who were hiding from tigers in the long grasses ...
