Re: August Sighting 2010

I had about seven Lulworth Skippers at Worth Matravers on the footpath running south of the village on Tuesday. Also about twelve Silver-spotted Skippers and plenty of Adonis Blues at Fontmell Down on the Wednesday. The Monday saw Adonis Blues also at Lankhill Bottom. Monday afternoon at Bindon Hill...

Re: Collins Butterflies of Britain & Europe

Update : I managed to sell my old version for a good price and buy the new one with some pounds to spare so I am a happy bunny. Thanks.

Purple Emperors on the A303?

Evening all,

In a couple of weeks I shall be on the A303 to Basingstoke so I wanted to ask if there is still a chance of seeing any Purple Emperors and if so then could I please have some more information on where and how to see them?

Same for Silver-spotted Skippers.

Many thanks,
Andrew.

Lincolnshire Sites

Evening all,

I shall soon be spending a few days in Lincolnshire based in or around Cleethorpes. I am a bit of a low lister when it comes to butterflies so can anyone advise me if there are any specialities or sites I could try for near Cleethorpes?

Any Orchid sites too?

Thanks,
Andrew.

Re: M42 thread macro lenses

Thanks for the replies so far. My experiences are a bit mixed up to now. I have tried a Helios 44M 58mm f2 lens and the quality of my piece is not so good. Close ups of daisies did not come out sharp. I have a reverser coming in the post so I shall try that method out and see how good it is used tha...

M42 thread macro lenses

Hello, I am now starting to dabble in the world of M42 thread lenses using an adaptor to fit them on to my Canon 40D camera. This offers an exciting potential of cheap lenses. After all quality glass is quality glass and if they work on a 40D then that's suits me fine. What I want to ask is if anyon...

Re: Collins Butterflies of Britain & Europe

Flipping between pages to cross reference the images and the text is a tad annoying at times especially when in the field. Has the new version lumped the text and images together like in the bird guide? It is a pity the text was not updated and shows lack of foresight. Maybe they kept that back for ...

Collins Butterflies of Britain & Europe

Evening all, I currently have the hardback 1997 version of Collins Butterflies of Britain & Europe by Tolman and Lewington (ISBN 0007189915). It has the purple and white cover with a Peacock wing on the top half. I am considering upgrading to a paperback version of the new edition. Is it worth d...

Re: Circular Polariser Filter for Macro Photography?

Thank you Mark and Gruditch, I now think it wise to keep it for use in certain situations as you both have mentioned. It would be silly to flog it for a few pounds on eBay and then pay more when I feel I need one again. So it is staying in my bag.

Thanks again,
Andrew.

Circular Polariser Filter for Macro Photography?

Evening, I have just sold off a lens and am flogging the filters that fitted it. I have a circular polariser but am not sure if I should keep it or not as I think it might have a place in macro photography and would fit my macro lens. Can anyone offer any advice on this? Should I keep it or flog it ...

Re: Sigma 105 handheld vs 150 tripod mounted

Good evening,

Do you use a ballhead on a monopod when using the 105mm and if so is it a comfortable set up to use?

Regards,
Andrew.

Re: South West Butterflies

Good morning Roger, Thanks for that. I did follow the Devon website daily basis but last year I let butterflies lapse as I got into the DSLR game and I am finding my feet but now I have a macro I shall probably look at butterflies 'properly' again next year and be back on the Devon website. Regards,...

Re: South West Butterflies

Good afternoon, Thanks for the further replies and leads to other links. Thanks for the offer Roger (Gibbons). Could I hold on to your kind offer for another date? I ask as I am currently trying to sort myself out for a few photography items and with spring being some way off I will most probably be...

Re: Non-digital 105mm Sigma Macro : Why so expensive?

..............Having said that Sigma will always rechip any lens and provide this service free of charge (or always have so in the past and state they will in the future) Good afternoon, This certainly is interesting. If I decide to keep the lens then I may pursue this avenue and see what Sigma hav...

Re: Non-digital 105mm Sigma Macro : Why so expensive?

Good evening, Since this morning, I have had a rethink. I shall now keep it for a couple of weeks and test it out thoroughly as I feel it would be a shame taking a mint lens back just because I do not feel comfortable with it. I could post some images here if possible and ask for feedback if that wo...

Re: South West Butterflies

Good evening Roger, I did not even know of Devon Books here. Googling that name draws a blank so they must have gone bust. Shame. Our local bookshop also went out of business after being outmuscled by the net and Waterstones. The books is available at £25 or about £85. Ouch! I would be delig...

Re: Non-digital 105mm Sigma Macro : Why so expensive?

Good morning, I did think that might be an issue and three times I have had black images. I think you are right. I shall return it tomorrow. The seller did compare it with the price of a DG version on the shelf. Basically, since knowing it is a non-digital version I have not had peace of mind really...

Re: Non-digital 105mm Sigma Macro : Why so expensive?

I'm looking at the box now. It has 'For nikon AF D'. The 'D' means digital. All but one of the pics in my personal gallery on here were taken with this lens, coupled with a Nikon D200. :D I really don't understand the 'rotation' thing. :D If it works well on your Canon,,,it must be digitally compat...
