Re: Plants for woodland butterflies
Hello Matsukaze I'm sure you are right about the fertilisers; my husband tried sowing wild flower seeds about three or four years ago, only about half a dozen plants came up and they were almost immediately swamped by the grasses growing back, and nothing re-seeded itself. The following year I gathe...

Re: Plants for woodland butterflies
Thank you Zonda and Lee, I shall try your suggestions, although I am not sure where to get British wildflowers from - is it best to trawl the internet for sites selling seeds? As for Buddleia, I forgot to mention that we also get a few bunnies nibbling the grass etc, will I need to protect the base ...

Plants for woodland butterflies
We own a static caravan in North Norfolk on a woodland site called Kelling Heath. Our pitch is in a comparatively new area that used to be a carrot field; it is now surrounded by young British native trees - beech, birch, elm, oak, wild cherry, rowan, holly, chestnut (not native, but well establishe...

Early hibernation? Update
Yesterday morning I posted a question about two Tortoiseshells (?) apparently hibernating in the corner of my bedroom. As the day went on it proved to be the hottest of the year so far - and the two butterflies woke up, flew to a window and were assisted to find the way out! One had only been there ...

Re: Must save my Queen
I have to agree with you that there seem to be far more butterflies about than I can remember for years - even if in my garden I can only boast Gatekeepers, Peacocks, a solitary Meadow Brown, and of course many, many 'Cabbage' whites. Beautiful butterfly picture, I would want to frame it if I had ta...

My daughter took this photo of a butterfly at Kelling Heath in North Norfolk last week, what is it please? I have never seen anything like it before.

Hibernating very early?
Over the last few years I have had butterflies (usually just one at a time) hibernating in a corner of my bedroom ceiling. Twice before it has appeared there in August. This year I first noticed one on 14 July, and yesterday I realised that it had been joined by another one. I think that they are sm...

Re: Norfolk butterfly
I should have made it clear that I was talking about an outside area, so it is probably my fault Bill.

Re: Norfolk butterfly
Hello Bill
The butterfly garden is just an area planted with flowering plants designed to attract butterflies, it is not an area where butterflies are introduced.

Re: Day flying moth
Thank you Dave I have followed the link, and the markings are almost identical to my photos of 'my' moth with its wings closed - apart from the orange blob. Does the blob mean it is a slightly different moth, or had it got something wrong with it? You must excuse my ignorance if that is a really stu...

Day flying moth
This moth was visiting flowers in my garden in Northamptonshire, and then it settled down to rest in the shade of a leaf. It had a distinctive shiny orangey blob on its thorax, but I can't find anything similar on my web searches.
Can anyone help me to identify it please?

Re: Norfolk butterfly
Hello Denise and Pete After sending that photo of the Monarch I noticed that the file date said 'modified on', so I've spent all morning rooting out old cds, that I'd copied photos onto, to try and find the original. It turns out that I actually took the photo on 29 July 2003, along with a few shots...

Re: Norfolk butterfly
Thank you for that information Pete. I wish I had known that at the time! I feel quite proud to have managed to see one now. It never occured to me to search through pictures of anything other than British butterflies. I am struggling to remember exactly where I took the photo, but I am fairly certa...

Thank you Denise. Am I right in thinking that Monarchs fly over from America?
