Re: June 2023
Sorry, I should have put this in the July thread!
Re: June 2023
Today has been probably the best day this year for seeing butterflies close to home. I visited a private woodland and saw the following: Silver-washed fritillary about 15 White admiral about 6 Red admiral 10 Ringlet, meadow brown, gatekeeper: loads large white 4 Green-veined white 1 Small skipper 1 ...
Re: June 2023
Further to yesterday's posting by me, I now attach a photo of a gatekeeper from the mini-meadow in my front garden. That makes 5 species there: large white, small white, gatekeeper , small skipper and meadow brown.
Re: June 2023
Your photo of the very fresh small tortoiseshell convinces me why it is my favourite UK butterfly!

Re: June 2023

Re: June 2023
Here are the two swallowtail butterflies seen recently in Norfolk. Originally I thought there was only one but it is clear from the photos that one has a slightly damaged wing tip and the other does not. I hope you enjoy the photos.
Re: June 2023
Swallowtail photos taken on my mobile phone from the back of my compact camera. Better photos to follow. See below.
Re: June 2023
I went to RSPB Strumpshaw Fen yesterday. Very few butterflies, including one easily photographed swallowtail, a few speckled woods, meadow browns and red admirals. Also one female brimstone. A very good number of dragonflies including Norfolk hawker, four-spotted chaser, black-tailed skimmer and sca...
Re: June 2023

Definitely looks like the Escape Committee have stopped digging their tunnel and are looking for eas...
Re: June 2023

Fritillaries
I would appreciate any help in identifying these fritillaries, the one on the hand seen in Bulgaria and the others in France. All help very much appreciated.

Here are some skippers for your perusal. I think the IDs are correct but please feel free to amend as necessary.

Re: May 2023
I am a little befuddled distinguishing female common blues and brown argus butterflies. Richard Lewington says there is no hint of blue on either surface of the brown argus but the above photo shows some blue. I am confused!
