Compact camera or large zoom lens?

Following a trip to Bulgaria in April to see birds, butterflies and flowers, I realised that my big Sigma 150-600 mm lens was too heavy now. So I sold it on Ebay for more than it had cost me, and I have been using my Lumix FZ200 compact camera instead. It has a 25-600 mm F2.8 lens, and although not ...

Re: August 2023

Perfect day for photographing chalk hill blues at Arreton Down Isle of Wight this morning. Overcast with mild drizzle. Many chalk hill blues about, hundreds possibly over a thousand on the whole hillside. I attach some photos.

Re: July 2023

Arreton Down on the Isle of Wight is a great place to see chalk hill blues. Photos below.
Also at Newtown there were some very fresh peacock butterflies, one of my favourites.

Re: July 2023

I decided to venture out in to local woodland this morning despite the high winds. I was rewarded with over 20 silver-washed fritillaries plus two valezinas. :D :D There were many other species including white admirals, red admirals, peacocks, second brood brimstone and a couple of common darter dra...

Re: Favourite butterflies

Some excellent choices here by all of us. I accept that it is subjective, and I really enjoy seeing any butterfly in pristine condition wherever it is.

Re: July 2023

White admirals and silver-washed fritillaries become often quite damaged flying between brambles and other plants. It was good today to find some of each to photograph which were relatively unscarred.

Re: Favourite butterflies

My favourite European butterfly has to be Cynthias fritillary. Gorgeous colours and only found in high mountains.

Re: July 2023

I saw 19 species on my local patch today but it included an emperor dragonfly and a common blue damselfly! :( I have had some difficulty in the past distinguishing Essex and small skippers. However, I can highly recommend the book below which has helped me greatly. (There is a second edition now so ...

Re: July 2023

My wife and I have tried to make parts of our small front garden a wildflower meadow with some success. I attach a photograph from this morning with a lovely small skipper on bird's foot trefoil. Neighbouring front gardens have very little life on them, sadly. There were several skippers and gatekee...

Re: July 2023

A much better day's weather today. Over 35 red admirals at Kemphill Moor Copse near Ryde, plus a good number of silver-washed fritillaries, meadow browns, ringlets and gatekeepers. A few white admirals and one pristine peacock.

Re: July 2023

Not the best day for seeing butterflies today as it has been overcast with some rain showers. However, I did see a good number of meadow browns, ringlets, the odd marbled white, white admiral, gatekeeper and red admiral. Also, I saw several silver-washed fritillaries. Due to the lower temperature th...
