Re: Mallnitz - Erebia

The rest I can't name with reasonable certainty. They are probably all E. oemes. The first two are of the same one.

Re: Austrian (Tyrolean) Alps, July 2013

These species were common in Mallnitz as well. For me the palaeno was a let-down as it is local in Finland. I was hoping for phicomone, but none showed up. The number of blues was surprisingly low.

Re: Austrian (Tyrolean) Alps, July 2013

Not really suggesting anything, just surprised. I can't tell them apart anyway. I recall seeing the species in June and at higher altitude and the books seem to suggest that their flight period should be pretty much over. That much for books, I guess. Edit: Ah! Bivoltine in lower altitudes. I...

I wonder if that shown focal length is the actual (which depends on the focus distance) or the infinity one. Easy to test...

Re: Mallnitz - Erebia

Sorry, I meant the black spots in forewing upper side. This one doesn't seem to have any white in them.

Re: Austrian (Tyrolean) Alps, July 2013

Interesting. I didn't see a single suspected pharte. Either they were even more active than claudina or they don't co-exist.

That pristine Melitae is rather late for diamina. I wonder ... especially as I was looking more for aurelia.

Re: Mallnitz - Erebia

You are probably right, though the form with small spots was supposed to be in Scandinavia, wasn't it?

Re: Mallnitz

About Mallnitz: It's a very good place for butterflying! One can easily spend a week there without a car. The village is at 1200 m and one can get to 2800m simply by taking the Wanderbus to the cable station and going up to 2700 with it. That would take about 30 min. The other two local Wanderbus li...

Re: Austrian (Tyrolean) Alps, July 2013

You are right - when I finally had a picture with the white spots on the upper side I almost yelled. I had the spots on the underside earlier, but wasn't quite sure if others had something similar. As to height ... you are right about that as well. I'll put some comments to the general thread about ...

Mallnitz - Erebia

Here are the first Erebia-specific questions. The first is likely alberganus , but I'm not quite sure - there seems to be something atypical in the markings. ZIMG_2619-2621 EREoeme-alber.jpg The second and third are the same butterfly and the only one in this thread that is NOT from Mallnitz. It's f...

Re: Austrian (Tyrolean) Alps, July 2013

It should be interesting to compare species as we were quite close for the same time frame. I was in Mallnitz (Carinthia) 16.-20.7.

Incidentally, your earlier posts about this vacation and Guy's mention of claudina in the thread triggered my vacation.

Re: Colour Calibration

The spectra mentioned by dilettante can indeed be a problem. For that reason I tend to use my own light, which comprises of two flashes and a diffuser. That usually gets me pretty good starting point. Using a color chart in the beginning, end and occasionally in the middle will help. The iridescence...

Re: His Imperial Majesty & Dogs

I'll leave the dogs out of this, but both iris and ilia have spread rapidly in the southern Finland these last years. I would rather look for changes in weather conditions.

Re: Mallnitz

It should be easy to find near Mallnitz. I can tell the places I found it, but I'm sure there are many more. It was quite abundant in the two places I saw it (for sure). Not having a net meant I never did learn what species flew in what way, so I have to rely on the rare ones that sat down for a mom...

Re: Mallnitz

I think you missed the rear Erebia in the first picture :) ... and I was hoping for something else for the middle Melitaea in the lower one. Oh well, the claudina was a treat. I suppose this is the same, even though there is only one spot on the upperside. I think I saw ones without any as well, but...

Mallnitz

I just spent an interesting week in Austria. Most of it was in Mallnitz, but a couple of nights near Salzburg too with walking trips to Germany. The number of butterflies was amazing, but the gorgeous weather made photography difficult - the subjects didn't want to stop at all... Here are a couple o...

Re: Psodos Quadrifaria - Best places to see in France

I've seen it all over the Tour de Mont Blanc route. In France above Chamonix and after Les Houches. In my experience it is easy to see, but not that easy to photograph.

Finally!

It's not supposed to be difficult, but I sorely needed a better picture of the species. As far as I'm concerned, this one qualifies. I guess it helps if I spend this time of year at home and not somewhere in central or southern Europe. :D Let's see... Carterocephalus silvicola Ochlodes venatus Lepti...
