Re: Caterpillar behaviour
That has been tried in the past ... and I seem to recall that occasionally the newly introduced species may find something they like even better.

Re: Children paid bounty to kill Large Whites!!!
God knows, kids these days (mainly as a result of video games) are desensitised to killing far, far more than is healthy, and the worrying aspect is that if they see their supposed role models actually advocating it sufficiently enthusiastically in the REAL WORLD to the point where they're prepared...

Re: Mallnitz - a problematic Blue
Thanks! That was one major suspect, but the color seemed a bit different and the white "streak" under the hindwings didn't look like eros in T&L. Then again - this is the first I've seen (the one from Spain is suspect). :) Interestingly enough, it should be "West of Gross Glockner...

Mallnitz - a problematic Blue
I'm probably missing something obvious here, but I can't ID this one. The color is quite striking, the markings in hindwing are clear and then there is one spot where icarus would have two. But what species combines those three? I'm pretty sure these are of the same individual as I was following it ...

This one is female. There's quite a difference.

Interesting article
This article has some interesting points, though most are about moths: http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Ad ... ne.0047214. It compares species btw. Fennoscandia, Alps and North America.

I would say that the pictures are visible only to members of the "Group". I have no idea what group that would be. There is an icon to join, but I'm not on Flickr, so didn't try.

Re: Denmark butterflies
A couple of Maps in Austria, but quite common in the German-Austrian border near Salzburg. As far as L. populi is concerned, I suppose Finland is part of Eastern block then. It goes at least as far north as Oulu and a good place can yield a number of sightings in a couple of hours. I think I'...

Re: Mallnitz - Pyrgus
And then set 3. Unfortunately, the picture quality is going down. :( For these my guess is P. cacaliae . For the first that is based on the little that is seen from the upperside. ZIMG_2227 PYRcacal.jpg ZIMG_2772 PYRcacal.jpg These look like the P. serratulae s in earlier set... ZIMG_2188 PYRsp.jpg ...

Re: Mallnitz - Pyrgus
According to some paper I found there is a single record of P. carlinae from entire Carinthia. I don't recall how old the paper was, but it does make that rather unlikely.

Re: Mallnitz - Pyrgus
My guess was based on the upperside alone - I haven't been able to understand the underside ID's so far.

There's another shot of the P. cacaliae/warrenensis, but its from above as well. Likely not much help.

Re: Mallnitz - Pyrgus
That's the very reason I took so many pictures of suspect P. cacaliae s. 8) I'll check about more pictures, but I don't think there's more of that individual. And then the second set. I'm pretty sure the first is P. andromedae . ZIMG_2622 PYRandro.jpg and the second should be P. malvae / malvoides ....

Mallnitz - Pyrgus
Now that the Erebia s should be covered, we can move to more challenging group... These three I've tentatively named P. cacaliae . ZIMG_2211 PYRcacal.jpg ZIMG_2741 PYRcacal.jpg ZIMG_2812-2813 PYRcacal.jpg This MIGHT be P. serratulae . ZIMG_2719 PYRsp.jpg And this could again be P. cacaliae, b...

Re: Mallnitz - Erebia
No underside I'm afraid. Thanks for the IDs and confirmation ... and compliments! I have to say it is more about post processing RAWs than anything else. The original JPG:s are rather horrible. Edit: The chequered fringes! I must be blind. If I'm right and the attached picture is E. eriphyle , the t...
