Re: July 2011

Hi David, It seems your journey proved most worthwhile, 22 species in one day is pretty good going - over a third of the British list - well done. Just to add to your Dragonfly ID request, it's a male, the female Southern Hawker is a totally different colour, she's a beautiful apple green and chocol...

Re: July 2011

Tremendous images Michael! Your very fortunate to get even a reasonable sighting of a male, let alone a good photo, normally they take considerable neck-ache to even get a glimpse of one. It looks as if Brown Hairstreak is keeping in step with all our other early sightings this year, but it seems a ...

Bill, you're just a naughty man sometimes! I know they'd hide from me but not from David, surely! I'm never naughty Mike  Guess I'll have to pop down to Forest Farm and shake those Hairstreak critters up a bit for you... Bill :D PS. Re: July 2011

but seeing your post has got me considering going that extra bit further to Rodborough Common instead Hi Neil, If you decide on Rodborough, go to Swelshill Bank for Chalkhill Blue. Swelshill is actually on Bownham Common, next door to Rodborough. Just go down the lane past Winstons Ice Cream Factor...

Wonderful report of a wonderful butterfly holiday, reports such as this are a veritable minefield of information for anyone considering such a holiday. Re: July 2011

Rodborough Common, Stroud, Gloucestershire. Had a smashing day yesterday at probably the nearest location to South Wales that has Chalkhill Blue and though I suppose Brean Down in Somerset could also be considered, there's not much in it as regards mileage (about 150 mile round journey for me to ei...

I suppose that scientists now have a reasonable information base on how this happens, but perhaps zilch on the big question - why it should happen :!:

Re: Monkwood, Worcestershire

Sounds like you had a super day Melanie, incidentally I spoke to a gent about Monk Wood while on a visit to Oversley (Warwickshire) on Saturday, he spoke in glowing terms about the wood and mentioned that Silver-washed Fritillary are reasonably common there, so it appears you were just a bit unlucky...

Re: July 2011

Thoroughly enjoyed the time spent at Oversley Woods, Warwickshire on Saturday with Michaeljf and his lovely wife Karen ( see Michael's post above ). I have to be utterly honest now, when I arrived at the car park at Oversley Woods I was rather concerned, the track leading to it from the main road (o...

Re: White Admiral in Monmouthshire Woods (Wales).

Thanks for the kind comment Piers . Michael , I felt like a kid let loose in a candy shop during a visit to Bentley Woods last year, there were WA's everywhere, but to the contrary, you have to spend time searching and patience waiting in all the Monmouthshire woods...but I would'nt really have it a...

White Admiral in Monmouthshire Woods (Wales).

White Admiral has a very fragile presence in Wales, to the very best of my knowledge it's only found in the larger mature woods in and around the beautiful Wye Valley in Monmouthshire/Gwent, and a few other woods slightly further afield. During several years of search and study of this wonderful wo...

Re: Large Blue is now on the wing!

Open Day, Collard Hill. I was somewhat apprehensive about visiting with potentially too many visitors milling about, but the weather has been so frustrating that I felt I had to take a risk and go. The early part of the morning was dry and dull, rain looked highly likely with dark brooding banks of...

It's official Large Blue Day on Collard Hill tomorrow, the National Trust are putting extra Rangers on site to help with visitors questions. It's forecast that this could be peak emergence time...and the weather is set fair...YIPPEE
