So I have to wonder when autumn numbers are low, a greater percentage feed very quickly and enter hibernation with little delay. With this strategy, a larger number would survive into the next year. That's Common Carpet - Eppirhoe alternata...distinguished from the others by the thin grey line running thrugh the outer white band.

This is so very tricky - sadly nothing is black & white (pun intended). In my latest competition entry I had to remove a lot of dust spots from the image. (I cannot afford an Arctic Buttefly" at the moment :) ) Whilst I was "at it" a very out-of-focus grass stem that just appeare...
