Re: Purple Hairstreak – Favourite Photo of 2017

Some very nice pics guys. All of mine were taken between 21st June and 8th July at Woodwalton Fen, Cambs. As Allan has said unprecedented numbers down low, it was a lovely few weeks

Re: July 2017

Always a pleasure to see a Clouded Yellow as you can't factor it in to your butterflying day, weekend or even year sometimes. This one was bombing up and down for the hour I was visiting Woodwalton Marsh, Cambs 09.07.17

Re: Strumshaw Fen for Swallowtails

Once you have parked up go back along the road and turn left down the lane. There is a field on the right and yesterday they were feeding on the Red Campion there. Further along is the garden and after that a small hill, mainly feeding on Ground Ivy here along the hedgerow there. Get there as early ...

Re: Sad news about a UK Butterflies member.

Bill will be sorely missed. Loved the banter in his diary and posts. He was a true gentleman, went to great lengths escorting me around his local patch. We spent many happy hours butterflying. My sincere condolences to his wife Meryl and daughter

Re: March 2017

Cambridgeshire What a lovely day. Monks Wood,Brimstone mainly (5), 3 of them rather interested in this sign, but feeding generally on Primrose and Celandine, a lone Comma flew by. I only walked around the block adjacent to the old CEH buildings. Next on to Sawtry Brook Small Tortoiseshell 5 and a Pe...

Engine Bank. Cambs, 29th August We set out to look for Small Copper and we were not disappointed but the Small Tortoiseshell was the butterfly of the day. Numbers exceeded 600 on a mile walk, They were scarce during the weeks of the butterfly count but they sure made an amazing come back some 2 week...

Re: Chequered Skipper - returning to England?

It's a combined application for funding from 6 different organisations. I think Plantlife, Buglife and Bat Conservation were mentioned. It all depends if the smaller charities can raise their part of the funding.

Re: Butterflies of Yorkshire

My daughter moved to Yorkshire just over a year ago. When I saw this post I thought it might be useful. It only cost £5 + £3.50 postage for a brand new copy (published 2005) from Allan Rodda, Yorkshire BC and I received it the day after I asked. The cheapest on Amazon is nearly £11 inc postage for a...

Re: Chequered Skipper - Favourite Photo of 2016

Previous years the first week of June has been good for Chequered Skippers. Scotland had a lovely warm Spring (unlike the rest of us) so this year we were a bit too late to find any in pristine condition. As we drove up to Glen Loy we passed Glen Etive when Phil suddenly changed the plan  'Sha...
