Re: Fourth consecutive dismal summer for Cumbria?

Thanks for the interesting link, David.

I'm clearly living in the wrong area!

Re: Fourth consecutive dismal summer for Cumbria?

Thanks to all for the comments and info. It's a pity the MO don't produce some sort of weather variability index to give a measure of the extent of the difference in weather conditions across the country. It would be interesting to see if there was any meaningful trend from year to year. Not sure ho...

Re: Fourth consecutive dismal summer for Cumbria?

What's frustrating is that prior to summer there was high pressure centred over Wales which saw sunny and dry conditions, however since the end of May, Atlantic fronts have been queueing up one after another and effectively creating a Maginot Line along the Severn Estuary. Why can't these weather s...

Fourth consecutive dismal summer for Cumbria?

Sorry to be so parochial, but I don't get out much! I hope I'm wrong about this, but this "summer" seems to be going the way of the previous three up here: weeks of cloud and/or rain and/or wind with little in the way of sunshine. As far as I can remember, in each year this has followed a ...

Re: Lakeland Mountain Ringlets

Hello Trev et al Although I'm not really "in the know" I am in the area! You might find the following link of interest, which gives the map refs and dates (in some cases, anyway) of Mountain Ringlet sightings in the Lake District. It was taken from the Butterfly Conservation (Cumbria Branc...

Re: Northern Brown Argus in Smardale

Thanks for that info, Misha. I think the illustrations in your book are a better match to my observations than the illustrations in my book! In Tomlinson and Still the lower spot is either missing entirely (I saw several of this type) or of the same size and clarity as the higher spot and with a bla...

Re: Northern Brown Argus in Smardale

To answer my own question (I think): I've since had a look at the photos of the Brown Argus included in the book previously mentioned, and both the male and female specimens photographed show the same colon arrangement of the spots half-way along the leading edge of the rear wing. As I understand it...

Northern Brown Argus in Smardale

Hello Although I've been dipping into this site for a few years now, this is the first time I've been confused enough to ask a question! I was in Smardale (East Cumbria) a few days ago for the Northern Brown Argus. I must have seen 100+ specimens and photographed perhaps 20 or so. Although I'd never...
