Re: August 2021

I think Zigzag's "Luis Suarez beetle" is in fact one of the Capsid Bugs - Possibly Lygus pratensis - coincidentally, also endowed with strong piercing mouthparts

Re: Wasp/bee

Volucella zonaria (a hornet mimic hoverfly). Their larvae are sometimes found in wasps nests. Seems to be a lot around at the moment.

Re: Caterpillar ID help

PS: They look like final instar now, so they shouldn't do much more eating and should all gallop off down the trunk over the next few days to find somewhere to pupate. I'd just leave and enjoy them while you can. :D

Re: Caterpillar ID help

They are Lackey moth larvae Deborah... I used to see these every year on trees near my school 50 years ago. I love their little blue "faces" and they always reminded me of an elongated "Dougal" from the "Magic Roundabout" TV series from the same sort of time. Much less ...

Re: Odd looking plant...

I think it is Navelwort (Umbilicus rupestris) David... Note the dimple (navel) in the centre of leaves where it attaches to stem underneath.

Re: June 2020

It does look like a Noctuid moth. Maybe a Sword Grass or a Grey Chi?.. I think the colours can vary quite a bit, so you will have to see what it turns into and let us know Jack. If it is one of the above, it probably won't hatch until September or beyond.

Thanks for the replies guys. I did think of raising the caterpillar, but don't have Kidney Vetch in my garden.

Re: Green caterpillar on Kidney Vetch

Thought I'd have one last go at getting this caterpillar identified (probably a random micro moth of some sort), so I went back today with my macro stuff, flash and a piece of white card. Whaddayareckon? Green, with obvious white stripe down back and suggestions of stripes along sides.

Green caterpillar on Kidney Vetch

Hi Guys, Apologies for the terrible mobile phone photo, but I saw these two green caterpillars on Kidney Vetch the other day (one being ridden by a weevil and the other one bottom right)... I am pretty sure they are NOT what I was hoping to find (or are they?) as they are potentially the wrong colou...

Re: Life Cycles of British and Irish Butterflies

I'm pretty sure my postman thinks I've just bought a Pitbull puppy as he almost lost his fingers in my letterbox this morning. Beautiful book, rammed with 400 pages of informative text and great photos. I can't wait to get my teeth into it! Thanks for your dedication Pete - it really shows in...

Re: Female Adonis/Female Chalkhill Blues - undersides

So this butterfly must surely be a female Adonis?... It has 21 white bars in its antennae stalks and due to damage to the wings from - I suspect - a semi-successful bird peck, I can see some blue scales on the upper surface of the lower wings near the spots. What say Ye? It could fly, but had a nast...

Re: Female Adonis/Female Chalkhill Blues - undersides

Adonis certainly do look like they have fewer white bands on their antennae than Chalkhills - that's amazing. Around 20 seems good for my Adonis and 24 or more for Chalkhill Blues. I'm glad I asked! :D

Re: Female Adonis/Female Chalkhill Blues - undersides

Ooh, Thank you! - I don't get to visit this website as often as I used to and had missed that. Difficult to count the bands in the antennae in the field, but a very interesting way of checking photos afterwards. I'll have to go back and test the theory myself! :D
