"A Bad Summer Cuts Butterfly Numbers " Myth ?

We are all saying that this month's lovely summer is helping the numbers of many butterfly species to recover fron the previous 2 bad summers but is that in fact the case ? For many species for example White Admiral , Silver Washed Frit. , Dark Green Frit. which seem to be much more plentiful this y...

Re: July 2009 Sightings

Good sighting of 3 Clouded Yellows yesterday 13th July at Ouse Estuary NR Newhaven , 2 males 1 uncertain .
The Upper Thames site mentions a record of Marbled Fritillary in Finemere Wood Bucks . This appears to be the 2nd year running for this species in this location .

Bedelands Farm Nature Reserve West Sussex

Visited this Nature Reserve yesterday for the first time . It is on the outskirts of Burgess Hill West Sussex at the whimsically named World's End within 5 minutes walk from Wivelsfield Station . This is a large reserve with a mixture of flower rich meadows and pieces of ancient woodland with a larg...

OUSE ESTUARY NATURE RESERVE NEWHAVEN

If you look at the site on Google Maps all you will see is a desert of white brick/landfill and other bare ground which is how the reserve looked 2 years ago . Nature is doing it's w...

Re: Large Copper

Many thanks Padfield for a well considered reply . I think it is also important to distinguish between species which are basically sedentary and may live in very scattered colonies separated from possible sites for them and species that are to some extent migratory or species which which may expand ...

Re: Large Copper

Thanks for the responses , Shirley made the same point that I made , why is it acceptable to buy and introduce food plants into a new area but not butterflies . They are both "interfering with nature" . My view remains that in today's much fragmented countryside where natural colonisation ...

Re: Large Copper

Greetings to all on here , my first post so may as well make a controversial one . Many on this thread have argued that it is wrong to release captive bred specimens of species into new or existing areas . I would argue that it is not only not wrong to do so but that in the 21st century where suitab...
