Re: Recommended sites near Lulworth Cove May 24th-31st

Thanks Martin,

I've had a recount and we actually saw 18 species. Forgot we saw a Meadow Brown at Durlston CP.

Re: Recommended sites near Lulworth Cove May 24th-31st

Just come back from a week in Dorset staying near Swanage. Took a copy of Discovering Butterflies in Britain by D Newland and managed to visit Ballard Down, Durlston Country Park, Martin Down, Blindon Hill at Lulworth and Broadcroft Quarry on the Isle of Purbeck. In total saw 17 different species (a...

Thanks Guy, I did wonder if the last one might be a Cardinal but it was so tatty it was difficult to tell. The Corsican Wall Brown (Lasiommata paramegaera) is listed seperately in Lafranchis as endemic to Corsica and Sardinia although it does say it may be a sub species of Lasiommata Mergera. I only...

Acorn Bank

Visited Acorn Bank National Trust Gardens near Penrith in Cumbria today, was quite suprised to see upwards of 25 Butterflies there of which about 15+ were small Tortoiseshells, 5 or 6 Red Admirals, 2 painted ladies and a solitary small white. http://upload3.postimage.org/214713/2007_0922Penrith0012....

Well back from Sardinia. Saw a lot of butterflies in terms of quantity but not that much variety. Definately saw the following Swallowtail, Two-Tailed Pasha, Silver-Washed Fritillary, Meadow Brown and Sardinian Meadow Brown, Corsican Wall, Small Copper, Common Blue, Speckled Wood and Red Admiral, to...

Taken on Sardinia during the first week of September. It took quite a fancy to an ice cream stall!

Guy,

Many thanks for that I will let you know how I get on. I think we are staying a bit further west than you were based.

Butterflies in Sardinia

I'm going to Sardinia for two weeks on Monday next. Does anyone know of any good places to visit? We are based in the North of the Island opposite Corsica.

We visited Gait Barrows, Arnside Knott and Whitebarrow yesterday. The weather was not particularly good warm but overcast all day. Gait Barrows produced the only SW Fritillary as well as Small Tortoiseshell, comma, peacock, speckled wood, Meadow Brown, large white and Red Admiral. At Arnside Knott t...

I would think the only possibilities in the North West are in the Morecambe Bay area. Whitebarrow is listed in Discovering Butterflies in Britain as a possibility.

Brian,

I visited on Friday, the weather wasn't very good and there wasn't much flying. I did see one Scotch Argus and one unidentified Fritillary possibly a High Brown.

I havn't seen PH at Arnside but have seen one at Gait Barrows which is close by and well worth a visit.

Eccles,

Yes I saw that, never mind I enjoyed my morning at Hazelbury anyway.

Spent an hour at Arnside Knott today and saw a solitary Scotch Argus so at least there is one butterfly we only see in the North.

Thanks again for your advice.

Thanks for the advice. I managed to visit both Hazelbury Common and Bannerdown on Tuesday morning. Didn't see any Chalkhill Blue but enjoyed the Common particularly. As you said there were literally hundreds of Gatekeepers together with several other types. I didn't get to Clanger Wood but did see a...

Bob,

From the map reference you quote the ringlet site is some way from Rowley lake itself and nearer to Burnley. Is that right?

So far this year we have seen in our garden which borders onto open moorland the following: Small Tortoiseshell Red Admiral Peacock Holly Blue Orange Tip Large White Small White Interestingly the recent sighting of ringlets i...

Thanks for that information. I've manged to work out where 3 out of the 4 are from the sites section. The one I can't find is Hazelbury Common (is it near Box?) which is a shame as we don't get many Chalkhill Blues in the NW! Directions to this one would be very much appreciated.
