betty daws wood

Hoping to take a holiday with the wife to south wales in July, and want to spend a couple of days at Ross on Wye, can I see the white admiral in this location? any advice from members will be useful, the forest of dean is too big to explore, so some of the smaller woods may be easier to visit

Re: Monthly competitions and image manipulation

After reading all the comments for and against another competition section, I go with the no's, perhaps just a comment with the entry, although some image manipulation is obvious, a bit of digital gardening to any photo to enhance it should be allowed, we do have a high standard from a few members a...

Re: Lantana

Hi Rosy Lantana is a good nector plant, I grow it every year and use it in the greenhouse, in warm summers it will grow outside but the leaves "blue up* with the cold, they need frost protection for the winter, so a cold greenhouse is fine, and it's a good idea to take cuttings every year and t...

Re: Just really starting out with D-SLR

Hi Dave Now got the same Canon dslr as you, up till christmas I was using the 350d, I tend to use a monopod when I can otherwise it's hand held, it's not often you get chance to set up a tripod. On the subject of focusing ,change the red led metering aid to one led, when this flashes you will have f...

Re: April 2008 Entries - Open

Looks like I opened a can of worms with my comments on Simon c's photo, some good comments from members, and I think a separate section would be best, keep the competition entries the same, so our film users can still take part, I myself have some good ideas for making the perfect photo, imagine not...

Re: April 2008 Entries - Open

Hi Simon
nice shot, I suspect a bit of work in photshop to get the multiple images, quite difficult
freezing wing motion, high speed flash essential, Stephen Dalton did a lot of this type of work many years ago

Unknown moth

yes I know we are a butterfly group, but with our talents I'm sure a member may help me identify this moth, we get the common noctuids in our area, so cabbage moths, dot moths, daggers and angle shades are easy to identify, this I found it in my greenhouse, I was collecting foodplant (SALLOW) for so...

Hi Charles, I had the same problem with image sizes when using photo buckets. Athough I will continue to use this free photo hosting site I have found if I resize my image before uploading to photobuckets It sorts out the problem, the size I use 900 x 600, give it a try
