Nick you are right. I think we should square the circle. Maybe begin this as another thread somewhere?. The original post was about the legality of selling butterflies ...no matter how related these later comments have been to that.

Re: August Sighting 2010
Mrs Brimstone still ovipositing on Common Buckthorn yesterday. The local recorder is looking into it and asked if she may be second brood. I haven't seen any others doing the same and I think I would have with so much Buckthorn of both types around. This must be some kind of record for late laying. ...

Re: How can this be legal??
Nick and others.... You are not in a minority being cynical. That makes at least 3 of us! I think there may have been others... Anyway, just trying to think outside the box....Is there a slight chance then, if it is all too cosy, that the boards of these corporations have a policy, be it written or ...

Re: How can this be legal??
Nick you are also right here...about the behaviour of corporate giants...like Tusco "Don't worry, we may be responsible for trashing the countryside - but it is really OK because we saved some cuddly animals here or cute birds over here...." (Not usually included: "And all this PR we ...

Re: How can this be legal??
Hehe. Spot on again CC. Where I live we have Britain's largest manned toad crossing patrol and the local borough council -Ipswich Borough Council- Ipswich Borough Council  have decided to sell the field for £4 million to a developer to build more houses. Really in keeping with biodiv...

Re: How can this be legal??
Hi Pete Well, I think you’ve summed up the emotive subject in a few succinct words. Very helpful. There are mixed/conflicting views - and we have to live with it. Thanks... :D Hopefully we butterfly enthusiasts- who have these different points of view and preferences when it comes to butterfly speci...

Silver - washed Fritillary
Silver Washed have been making presence felt in Suffolk this year. Apparently they have been spreading, possibly from an introduction/ re-introduction in Essex a couple of years ago. They are now turning up much farther afield, even as far as Dunwich and possibly Beccles. Certainly one male was stil...

Re: April 2010 Competition
I didn't forget to vote Gruditch but in the interests of 'good sportsmanship', I think it sucks that you can't vote '10' for your own piece of work.... How else is one going to win? :? :D Well done on coming third though, nice shot. John's 'First of the season' Orange Tip was a very worthy winner an...

Re: Brimstone egg-laying
Thanks Guy :D . I think that mother Brimstone is superb and her job is a real labour of love. Like you say, she never benefits by seeing her children and yet still she continues bestowing that wonder upon us and upon the rest of nature with so much care and attention. I've been really fortunate to h...

Re: Brimstone egg-laying
Fantastic Guy. Had similar expereince myself a couple of days ago in the back garden with a 15ft plus 'tree'....'oblivious' is the word. It's always a magical expereince tho' isn't it. My lady hasn't come back but there are plenty of other bushes in the woods near me. Nice that someone else is repor...

Re: Buckthorn
Hi Angie I shouldn't worry too much about Alder Buckthorn outgrowing you because it is in fact a shrub. They will grow up to 15 ft -ish but it takes a long, long time. They are ususally outcompeted by other vegetation, or grazed before they can get that high... In hedgerows, Hawthorn and Hazel for ...

Re: Alice Holt Forest Carnage
from the Purple Empire we read:- I've been dealing with the FC at Alice Holt over the issue of ride-side sallow management since the autumn of 1976 and have made precisely no progress with them on this matter whatsoever, and neither has any other body. 34 YEARS and no joy whatsoever? If true then it...

Overseas
Personally it would be a toss of a coin. There could be some good points (e.g.,adding breadth to the website) and some bad(e.g., contradiction in terms of web address) if you added foreign species. There is so much that we don't know of our own native insects that there is no doubt a website of this...
