Re: April Butterflies

Hello, 22 April 2008 Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex My first Holly Blue Butterfly of the year was seen in the twitten from Victoria Road to Ropetackle at the eastern end by the main road. Small Whites were frequent over the allotments and Large Whites were occasionally seen. A Peacock Butterfly fluttered o...

Re: First Grizzled Skippers

Noted comments by Perseus re cattle grazing - all I can do is report what works for us! People will see that views on the efficacy of grazing with cattle obviously vary. It is of concern to me that newcomers to conservation might be feeling a bit confused! I am always willing to discuss what we do ...

Re: April Butterflies

Is it a Small White? I have this quite often with both Green-veined Whites and Small Whites landing on Garlic Mustard.

Re: First Grizzled Skippers

Management really depends on the history of the site. In the past, it was usually the best economic use, but now with conservation areas, this is not so clear. Some definitions of types of land use: Pasture (type of animals) Meadow (hay or created wildlife) Rotation of crops land Arable Nature Reser...

Re: Snow April 6th 2008!

Hello, 6 April 2008 No butterflies were recorded. I looked. I wanted a Peacock in the snow. A surprise snowfall continued through the morning to a measured depth of 75 mm on the pavement outside my home in residential Shoreham. The Met Office recorded temperature plummeted from 4° C at 9:00 am to 0°...

Re: First Grizzled Skippers

Hello, 16 April 2008 In the late afternoon, past the optimum time for butterflies, on the transect walk of the lower slopes of Mill Hill, there were no Grizzled Skippers to be seen as definites in passing, so I retraced my steps and a smaller male was seen amongst the Bramble and then a second one. ...

Re: First Grizzled Skippers

As I saw your post about Mill Hill I thought I would have a look at Denbies Hillside. The chalk grassland was full of violets in flower but I didn't see any Grizzled Skippers there this time. I will try again in a week or so. I think cattle will actually eat the food plants of the Grizzled Skipper....

Re: First Grizzled Skippers

Grizzled Skippers are easy to overlook. I would have missed them on my last visit to Mill Hill if it was not for the enthusiasts there who had seen ten! The nectar plant visited on the slopes are violets. I have only got records on the Dog Violets which follow the Sweet Violets. http://www.glaucus.o...

Re: April Butterflies

Hello, 13 April 2008 There were three other butterfly enthusiasts on the lower slopes of Mill Hill in the afternoon, chasing around the Grizzled Skippers until they stopped for a photograph. I saw three of them, but Andrew Burns reported at least ten different ones (ignoring possible doubles, twenty...

Re: April Butterflies

Hello, 11 April 2008 On a breezy afternoon, a cycle ride to Anchor Bottom, Upper Beeding, and back along the Downs Link Cyclepath to Old Shoreham, failed to discover a single butterfly or anything of interest. Re: April Butterflies

My trip was to see if I could spit the first Small Heaths of the year, which I found by accident for the last two or three years. Iwas also looking for Speckled Woods which I did not find either.

I have not got a least favourite, but my best favourites are Chalkhill Blues.

Re: First Grizzled Skippers

It is the equal earliest date for Grizzled Skippers on Mill Hill with year 2005 this century. The species is rather localised in distribution locally. Only found on wild ungrazed terrain on the chalk.

Re: April Butterflies

Hello, 10 April 2008 The vanessid that flew strongly from south to north over Rosslyn Road, Shoreham, and over the rooftops was almost certainly a Peacock Butterfly. My first worn orangey Small Tortoiseshell was seen over the northern part of Frampton's Field next to the Pixie Path and further east ...
