I was at the afternoon session at Green Down on Saturday. The start was delayed due to very heavy rain but we had half an hour before the rain started again in which time three Large Blues were seen, inc. this one. http://upload9.postimage.org/49101/largeblue236077.jpg The morning session had, appar...

Silver-studded Blues

Plenty of Silver-studded Blues on the wing on the Great Orme yesterday. More than 50 along a short stretch of path SW of the car park. Mainly males like this: http://upload8.postimage.org/781863/ssblue4gtorme10607.jpg But also this darker type: http://upload8.postimage.org/781847/ssblue7gtorme10607....

Chequered Skipper

Has anyone got any information on whether Chequered Skippers are being seen at any of their regular sites at present?
Thanks

Met someone who said there had been eleven present earlier this week. Also saw Brown Argus, Large Ski...

Glanville Fritillary in Somerset

Andrew
Are there many on the wing and is there a best place to find them? I was contemplating a visit to the Isle Of Wight this weekend and this is a much easier trip.
Thanks
david
PS Is this considered to be a self-sustaining colony?

Glanville Fritillaries

Thanks. Not really what I wanted to hear. I don't think I can get down there until 26th May at the earliest. What chance they'll still be about?
Will the change to less sunny weather slow down emergence and hold some back to the end of the month?

Glanville Fritillaries

I need some advice. I've been planning to visit the IoW since failing to see any Glanville Fritillaries at Hordle Cliffs last year. A visit in early June seemed advisable but latest reports on the Hants and IoW Butterfly Conservation sightings page suggest they are already on the wing in large numbe...

Are there standards by which introduced species are deemed "tickable" to use birding language? The British list (of birds) excludes species which are non self-sustaining introductions or escapes - termed category E birds. It would seem that Large Copper would fall in the equivalent butterf...
