Re: Migrant prediction

Your prediction didn't stand a chance of being correct today in North Lanc's Jack, and the forecast I've just viewed doesn't suggest for a moment that it will be correct the rest of the week up here either. In eight hours today I saw a single Wall Brown being blown all over the place poor thing, and...

Re: Small Tortoiseshell

I have a feeling I may be repeating myself here (in a previous post) however, Small Tortoiseshell and Peacock are known to be 'down' this year in my neck of the woods (North Lanc's). I'd personally claim the former to be actually 'missing' though on Saturday I did see c.26 Peacocks in two areas on t...

Speckled Wood

Sorry to continue with my 2008 butterfly 'gloom' up here in the rain and wind swept north, but the reality is close to a disaster. Anyway enough of this, here is a rather nice looking Speckled Wood from my wanderings on Friday 29 August, and on a positive note I have seen c.26 Peacock today (Sat) at...

Re: Comma

I don't want to forget names so thanks to 'everyone' who passed a kindly word about the Comma image in particuler with reference to 'using' cheap everyday cameras. I have always held the opinion....put 'any' camera in the right hands and you will get a result. You have all inspired me to contribute ...

Re: Comma

Hi Mark Turned into something quite amusing my pic of the worn Comma. You was much more 'on the ball' than I was regarding the camera date which I have now rectified. Yes, taking photographs of/in the future and winter sightings at that. By the way, I have never thought of the website as anything bu...

Re: ID Please

Many thanks Gruditch, though I hoped for something other than your ID as I know the SWF and now feel I should have tried a little harder on this one but being in Corfu.......

Only thing to hope for now is a challenge to make things a bit more exciting.

ID Please

Not much to go on here I'm afraid, taken by a family member on holiday in Corfu recently and just one for the 'Family Album'. It appears to be a 'fritillary'.

Anything much appreciated as part of my learning....anyone!

Re: Comma

Hi Mark

Impressed with your Exif technology which apart from anything else has shown me the date on the camera is 'way out' indicating that I have achieved a quite remarkable butterfly record in mid-winter.

Thanks for comments from 'Mouse' and yourself.

Comma

Simply an everyday unpro image of a not so pristine Comma butterfly seen today at Foulshaw Moss on the Lanc's/Cumbria border. I regret I cannot comply with requests for photoghraphic details on shutter speed and many other technical matters regarding the picture, save to say it was taken with a very...

Re: 2008 First

Hi Ian I understood your post perfectly, 23+ in a day is as you put it 'amazing' and heres me lamenting on the summer of '08 in particular with regards to butterflies. I was somewhat cheered up today with the sight of one or two Peacocks, my first of the year (believe it or not) Red Admiral, and a n...

Re: 2008 First

Ian Your record of 'an amazing 23+ Wall Browns' prompts me to report seeing three today at Cockersands on the coast in North Lanc's. The only butterfly species (save a solitary Speckled Wood and the prolific 'whites') seen in seven hours of intense searching in Gods great outdoors. Remember the butt...

Re: Painted Lady anyone!?

Congratulations to Rosy and Deano, two of a minority of people to see Painted Lady in 2008. I have just viewed a five day weather forecast for the North of England and can assure you I have NO chance of adding to my total of two over these next five days to a miserable list for 2008.

Re: 2008 First

Nice shot, still no painted ladies here since the last one a while ago. I remember 2006 as well, first year I saw clouded yellows, hundreds of tortoiseshells/peacocks/red admirals/painted ladies etc... and humming bird hawkmoths, a few of them and hundreds of silver y moths, I practically could not...

Re: 2008 First

I get the distinct impression that Peacock and Small Tortoiseshell are 'down' this year, indeed I have personally recorded as many - if not more - Small Copper and Gatekeeper so far in 2008. I've just taken a look at a BBC five day forecast for the North Lancashire area which shows rain all five day...

Re: 2008 First

I think you could be right Paul....'maybe they're just late this year'. However, I'm sticking to my 'disaster' (strong words these) prediction, at least up here in the North. I've been out today on the coast and although it turned quite pleasant eventually the wind still has a chill and our forecast...

Re: Painted Lady anyone!?

Hi IAC

I'm a little late seeing this thread of yours and I found it moments after posting news of my first on 25 July which you can read under '2008 First'.

I hope you like the image attached to the post.

2008 First

The year of 2008 looks set to become something of a disaster for butterfly sightings up here in the North of England. It has taken me until 25 July to find my first Painted Lady, and I have personally heard of only one other sighting in my area. Other sightings - other than a few more common species...

Re: Nearing the end...

If we are going to be sentimental then this is the ultimate in sadness in relation to photographing butterflies at deaths door.

I can truthfully say I have never seen anything like this before, a quite remarkable image the species of which I have no intention of guessing.
