Thanks for that.
I have Essex and Small skippers in the field opposite so that makes three types here.

Re: May 2009 Sightings

We had one lone meadow brown pottering around our field today...isn't it rather early for them? Saw 3 GVW a brimstone, 2 small heaths, half a dozen speckled woods in the garden and a a few painted ladies flitting by. Also 2 wonderful male Broad-bodied Chaser dragonflies doing battle over the garden ...

Re: Black butterfly with iridescent blue patch.

The one I saw had more a rounded wing as far as I could tell and was around the size of a meadow brown.

Just wondering - could the one you saw have been a male cherry moth http://webzoom.freewebs.com/saturnids/W ... methea.jpg as they have long wings?

Re: Black butterfly with iridescent blue patch.

No, There was no way this was a red admiral. It looked entirely black but when I was chasing it across the garden    I could see it from behind and that is when I saw the blueish colour which did look iridescent. I'm wondering what sort of butterflies they are using for releases at we...

Re: Black butterfly with iridescent blue patch.

Well I was just going to post asking if anyone knew what butterfly looked totally black when it flew past and I spot your post. :D Seen it twice now but each time it has vanished over the hedge and away into the distance, once over the next field and once over a neighbours hedge, so haven't been abl...

Re: Painted Lady influx!!!

So I take it they will be looking for fields of thistles?

If so my neighbours field has about 9 acres of the prickly things.

Re: Painted Lady influx!!!

Huge numbers moving over the downs near Chichester. Hundreds were stopping at a garden centre for a quick snack on the summer bedding plants.

Re: Violets

Well I got the books out and the ones in the lane are dog violets for sure. I also went and checked out the wood where I saw one silver washed last year and found it has a really good load of violets in flower so hope to go back later in the year and have a really good frit hunt. :)

Re: March 2009 Lepidoptera Sightings

I saw an Orange tip in my garden near Petworth today.
That's a first for me as I didn't see those here last year, so its another one to
chalk up on my garden list. :)

Re: Violets

Well I've been out studying and I think the ones in the lane are dog violets, but the ones in my corner plot of the garden are definitely sweet violets as they have a smell. I haven't seen any frits in the area ( except some silver washed in a wood about half a mile away) but that does not mean ther...

Violets

We have lots of violets growing along our lane.

But I am thinking they might be sweet violets rather than the dog violets, am I right in assuming that the sweet violet is not used as a larval food plant whereas the dog violet is?

Thanks

pupae id please

Hi I found a pupae in an old poultry feed sack, I haven't moved it or photographed it, but I did a search on the web and the only pic I can find is this one on Flickr http://flickr.com/photos/-wit-/164764644/ Which looks identical to the one I found, however it is not id'd on that page either, can a...

Re: Not Lepidoptera (Birds) - 2

Oh I love long tailed tits! I never knew you could get them on bird feeders, I saw some round here a few days back so I had better keep a good lookout on the feeder. I've been hoping a nuthatch will arrive as I know some are in a nearby wood. Super photos.

Re: November Butterflies

Hi,

I havent been on the site for a while but as I spotted a lone Red Admiral in our orchard today and it seemed so late in the year to see a butterfly I thought I would report it.

Ohhh edited to say it was near Petworth West Sussex

Re: September 2008

Petworth. Saw a wonderful fresh but very very small comma at the garden centre yesterday. It kept settling on the red foliage of the roses. Today to my surprise I saw a meadow brown in the field, I hadn't seen any of these for well over a 10 days, and thought they were all gone. Some small whites, A...
