Re: Mystery of Small Tortoiseshell decline solved?

Hi Dave, I think that most parasites are host specific. Other caterpillars may not find the eggs palatable, or the eggs may not hatch in a different gut. There may even be bacteria in the alimentary tracts of the other butterflies, which would attack the eggs. I guess the research presently being un...

Looks like a pretty beaten-up Yellow Underwing. Has it been mixing it with some of your less savoury acquaintances??

Re: September 2008

I have yet to pick up the knack (it is not for lack of trying). Hi Matsukase, You gotta believe!! I spent half an hour looking on a bit of English Elm last year, without much hope of success, due to its position. To my surprise, I finally found an egg! As an experiment, I went back over the branche...

Hi Denise,

Many thanks, lots of sense but, as Pete says, hardly blindingly obvious.

Or in the winter, for eggs, once the leaf is off. (I found 20+ eggs around Stafford Castle last winter and, in 15 years of walking the area, have never seen an adult!!).

Sorry if I'm being a bit thick, but is it still possible to change one's entry for the month? I can't see how to delete my present entry and my second effort won't upload.

Re: Encourage birds and loose the butterflies?

Hi Rosy,

I have seen both Great Tits and House Sparrows 'working the Buddleia', picking off butterflies at their leisure - until I shooed them off

Re: September 2008

Hi Y'all, Just back from a couple of days at Durleston, where the weather was approaching perfect. Apart from the expected multitude of Meadow Browns and a massive influx of Silver Ys, there were good numbers of Large and Small whites, Common Blues, Speckled Woods and Red Admirals. I also saw 20+ Ad...

Re: August 2008 Votes

Although there is not an actual 'slideshow' function, if you open the first picture and then click anywhere on it, it changes to the next picture and so on. Effectively a slide show, I would have thought. Sorry to be a bore if everyone has realised this already  , but I just discovered it by a...
