Just back from three days in the Pyrénées-Orientales where day three was a write off - cloudy, windy and very cold. First two days were mixed, but I managed to find 54+ species. Highlights were undoubtedly Bog Fritillary: 38-Bog Frit u.jpg and Violet Copper - a stunning little butterfly: 10-V C 8.jp...

Bog Fritillary

Whilst in the Pyrenees-Orientales recently I was fortunate to find a definite Bog Frit (clear underside photo). I hope these two uppers might also be eunomia and would be grateful for an expert opinion.

Re: Meadow Fritillary

Thanks, Guy, I had worried about the 'dumbell', but thought the general colour and light hindwing markings too pale for False Heath (which I've also only seen from photographs). The jizz seemed the same for all these butterflies, and at least one was very small (large blue size). I definitely saw th...

I'd like to meet some of those females - sounds like someone spent too much time with 'trolley dollies'.

Re: French Pyrenees 24 May - 2 June 2016

I was in the Pyrenees in early June a couple of years back and had had a pretty thin day. About 4 p.m., I saw a butterfly some way away which didn't look quite right for Large or BV White. It settled and turned out to be a Clouded Apollo. Within ten minutes, there was a simultaneous eclosion and abo...

Possibly Clouded Buff (Diacrisia sannio. Timing is right for a full grown larva.

Re: unknown caterpillar 1

Hi Herman,

I've scoured my caterpillar book and the nearest I can find is Bright-line Brown Eye, which ticks most of the boxes. In UK it is mainly found in July and August, but is apparently variously brooded in Europe.

Couldn't agree more about Chequered Blue. I saw it for the first time recently in Bulgaria - a really stunning, jewel-like little butterfly :) .

Re: Three more from Northern Greece

Very many thanks, once again, Guy.

I feel rather a muppet not seeing orbifer - it was the most frequent skipper there. Shame, really - I started butterfly watching aged about six, but missed out on the intervening sixty years, or I might do a bit better  .
