Tenerife

Just back from a rather disappointing break in Tenerife. Only managed to find four species. Small whites were fairly common and we saw Monarch, Gonepteryx cleobule and Canary Speckled Wood all in a park in Icod in the north. There was only one Brimstone, which declined to be photographed as did thre...

Re: Costa Rica Butterflies

I think it may be Anthanassa tulcis . Pacific slopes under 1000 mtrs. Widespread and commonest in June/July according to DeVries. Sorry, no idea about the first one. :( .

Re: Photo competitions

It is with increasing trepidation (for my own modest chances), that I watch the often coruscating entries roll in for the annual photo competition. The standard is rising exponentially each year and I raise my hat to the judges, who are faced with the monumental task of sorting out the winners - bra...

Re: Tenerife

Hi, Downland Boy,

Very many thanks for your informative post. I shall have a hire car so we shall definitely go to La Orotava. It will be great to see any butterflies in the depths of an English winter  .

Tenerife

I am going to Tenerife in January, staying in the south-west of the island. Does anyone have any tips for 'hotspots' on the island? I would particularly like to find Canary Islands Blue and Canary Red Admiral. Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Finding Small Heath Pupae

If you want to find SH eggs, you need a location with plenty of adults flying around, and then watch carefully for any butterfly crawling in the grass, rather than just resting. If you're lucky, you will find one ovipositing. You need to keep a very sharp eye on the exact place, as the eggs are stil...

Re: newly registered member...

I remember waiting in the cloud and occasional rain for six hours on Witherslack, hoping to see my first High Brown Fritillary. At 4.15 there was a flash of sun and an HBF appeared and landed on a small conifer right in front of me. I photographed it with closed wings. As the sun brightened it opene...

Thanks, Bugboy,

You certainly found some wonderful species there - perhaps you weren't encumbered  , I mean accompanied, by a wife...

The pic of the Sarota is too dark to really see any distinguishing features, but the white legs suggest acantus.

Do you have a photograph of the Sarota? They are such a fascinating group, I'd love to see it.

Re: Costa Rica

By the last morning the 90% humidity was beginning to affect my camera's electrics and I sat for an hour with my wife's hair drier trying to coax some life into it. I finally ventured out with most of the functions working and had what was for me, the highlight of the trip. Waiting in the shelter of...
