Re: Pete Eeles

Did you watch a female SSS ovipositing or search in a suitable 'rabbit-hole' site? It took me 15 mins to find a suitable site at Aston Rownant (from Jeremy Thomas's description), and there were three eggs within a sq. ft.

Re: Austrian Erebias

Thank you very much, guys. I'm really in awe of such expertise.

I did start early ( about age 7) but unfortunately missed most of the next 60 years

Carpe diem...

Re: Austrian Alps

One which I forgot from avant le deluge was a Large Wall Brown, the only one I saw all week: 1-Large Wall Brown 1.jpg On Wednesday I was up at the Sommerbergalm, the first stage of the Hintertux cable-car(2100m), by 11.30. The sky had clouded over and it was quite chilly. I wandered around for an ho...

The Penkenbahn disappearing ;into the mist: 1-Weather.jpg The day was enlivened by this little visitor: 2-Visitor.jpg The rain gave over for an hour and I used my free Penkenbahn trip. Thank you all so much for the input :D . There were good numbers of what I thought might be manto around. They drop into the undergrowth at the least provocation. Is this one? :

Re: Mayrhofen

Just back from a short 'Alps fix' in Mayrhofen, where I saw not one piece of litter during my stay – what a pleasant change after fast-food Britain. It is a beautiful area with acres of flowery meadows, but unfortunately, almost all are seeded and cordoned off, so that access to good butterfly areas ...

Great post, Mark,

Love the 'hairstreak', but was most fascinated by the 'Wall' - quite different from our version  . Look forward to the rest.

Mayrhofen

I'm going to Mayrhofen for a week from Saturday next. Does anyone have any info on the area and what I might find? Are there any good areas for Apollo? Any help will be gratefully received :D .

Re: Black?? Hairstreak

Sorry, Guys,

Looks like wishful thinking on my part  . Current thinking is that it is an unhatched Brown Hairstreak egg from last year. Any thoughts, anyone?

Just back from a few days on Ischia, one of the unsung jewels of the Mediterranean. Flowers everywhere, but despite several treks into the hills, surprisingly few butterfly species :( . The commonest by far was Wall Brown, with dozens being seen in many places. It reminded me of my childhood when WB...
