Purple Hairstreak or leaf?

I stopped off at my usual site to look for Purple Hairstreak yesterday. The previous evening had been better weather and at 7.50pm there were still several of them buzzing the tree tops. Unfortunately I didn't have camera or binox with me at the time. Anyway, I had my kit with me last evening, but i...

Springwatch

Here's a link to the piece on BBC Springwatch about the Painted Ladies.

To be honest, I was a bit disappointed (not sure what I was expecting, though - perhaps an interview with someone who actually knows what they're talking about?)

Re: Painted Lady influx!!!

So - what are your plans? Good question - and not sure how successful I'll be! But I have a 3-fold plan: Cheers, - Pete Best of luck, Pete, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who can't wait to see how you get on. I saw your post on the BBC Springwatch message board. No reaction so far? But here's ho...

Re: Painted Lady influx!!!

I can just visualize the literature in 2100s referring to "amazing Painted Lady" immigration in the early years of the twenty-first century. " We will never experience anything like that again. " We are witnessing history in the making. We can all say “we were there” Jack Well s...

Re: Painted Lady influx!!!

As a witness of a (now I see a modest) collection of Painted Ladies on Tuesday (see p3 of this thread), I'm really interested to know if anyone has caught the migration on video.. So - has anyone caught the 100's or 1000's of the beasts flying over their back yard on "film" yet? Here's hop...

Re: Painted Lady influx!!!

I'd not spotted this thread but came on tonight to see if anyone else has had a "Good Painted Lady day" like I have. After seeing none, nil, zero last year, today I have seen 30-40 in the space of a couple of hundred meters in about 20 minutes. Modest by south/central Europe standards, but...

Re: Small Tortoiseshell

Beautiful sunny morning in Northants on Sunday. On my long run I had the pleasure of passing over a dozen Small Tortoishells on one (fairly small) Buddleia in someone's front garden.

I was at Fermyn too!

Nigel - what a great day! Fortunately for me I couldn't get there till about midday and the Emperors were starting to flock then (slight exageration). I saw a simliar number to you - it was quite special wasn't it? I love your photos - I got some similar ones of the male on the ground, but I particu...
