Re: Turkish Butterflies

Thanks Guys,

I'll have a look for some of those guides - we go to Turkey quite a bit, and they would clearly be a great help....

Re: Turkish Butterflies

Thank you! You're right - it's nothing like a Dark Green Fritillary... a fact that hopefully I would have noticed myself when I eventually got around to looking at the photos properly :) . Pleased that it turned out to be a Cardinal though - not a species that I have seen before - you can only just ...

Re: Turkish Butterflies

Thanks Guy, Must say that I find this all a bit disheartening.... I am really a birdwatcher who has a very much peripheral interest in butterflies - if I see something when out and about, then I will try to get a photograph and attempt to identify it at a later time, but rather dispiriting to find t...

Re: Turkish Butterflies

Thanks Guys, Re: the second one - Lycaena asabinus - feel a little bit better now, inasmuch as this species doesn't appear in either of my field guides! (Collins or LaFranchis)... I've found it on the internet, and it appears to be Anatolian Fiery Copper... how does that relate to l. thetis, which i...

Turkish Butterflies

P1000518.JPG P1000571.JPG P1000619.JPG Hi, Not sure if you'll be able to help (being a group for UK butterflies...) but puzzled by some sightings from a holiday in SW Turkey last week.... The first one I can only make a Small Copper, which is a bit of a surprise, as in the field it looked much bigg...

Re: Where are all the butterflies? (and when will they recover!)

Recovering from low numbers might happen in a year or two, but total wipe-out could take decades ... or it might never happen. In the sixties a number of species disappeared from Finland and they have been finally re-appearing during the last few years. They could arrive through Russia or over the ...

Where are all the butterflies? (and when will they recover!)

Hi, I've spoken to quite a few people this spring and summer and a common theme seems to be a general lack of butterflies being seen - both in terms of species and overall numbers (must say that the number of Meadow Browns I have seen in the last few days is at odds with this, but the overall observ...

Re: Spanish Ilex

Hi Guys, Thanks very much for your help and comments - sounds like False Ilex it is.... Must confess that I too had been slightly confused by the comments about the black borders to the orange spots, since I thought I could see black on both sides too (albeit not as clear as they appear to be for Il...

Spanish Ilex

Hi, Encouraged by my relative success with getting an id for my Turkish Skipper, I thought I'd push my luck a bit and see what you could make of another id which has been a bit vexing over the last few weeks.... The following are pics of two Ilex butterflies, photographed in Spain about 5 weeks ago ...

Re: Skipper (SW Turkey)

Guy, Have you got Lafranchis? (I suspect you will have  ) Bottom right photo on page 28 is almost a carbon copy of the shot above. M. Hi Martin, Excuse my ignorance..... Lafranchis? .... is that a Field Guide? It is. As you will have gathered, I don't have a copy, so what is the species on P28...

Skipper (SW Turkey)

Hi, Not sure if anyone would be able to help me with an id for this Skipper - sorry, it's not a UK butterfly at all, but was actually seen last week near Dalyan in SW Turkey. It wouldn't really co-operate very well as grds views or photos, so not much to go on, I'm afraid... I am familiar with Small...
