Re: October 08

Susie, I suspect your orange butterfly/moth was a moth called the Vapourer. The male can look very Brown Hairstreak like in flight, especially as their flight periods overlap. It also flies by day. October is a little late for the Vapourer (generally ends late September) but the warm weather this we...

Re: Northern Brown Argus - Scotland

Mark, If you are calling in at Bishop Middleham don't forget the Dark Red Helleborines(assuming you like Orchids). They are out at the moment and in good numbers on the quarry floor. Probably Britain's best site for them. Not sure if the NBA will still be out, I struggeld to find any last year and I...

Re: ANy ideas?? I`m thinking Scotch Argus!!

Hello chassyp, Although only a record shot, like another replies have suggested, it does indeed look like Mountain Ringlet. Another/better photo could help confirm the overall impression. The background, assuming it reflects where caught, does not necessary look right for MR, but of course could ref...

Re: July Butterflies

Still at least 14 Heath Fritillaries on the wing at East Blean Wood near Canterbury on Saturday (5/07) afternoon. Also many Meadow Browns, but we saw no sign of White Admirals.

Re: Scotland in June

Hello George, Pleased you saw Chequered Skipper at Glasdrum. We checked Loch Arkaig and Spean Bridge on the 21st June in what seemed ideal conditions during the morning, but failed to loacate any CS. Neither did someone else we meet who checked on 23rd June. It does seem they may have finished early...

Re: May Butterflies

We visited Lydlinch Common SSSI yesterday afternoon and saw 7 Marsh Fritillaries in a brief bright spell just before the rain set in. If visiting this site please note that the ground is very wet at present. I had expected to see many more here but I understand that numbers are down this year.

Re: May Butterflies

I've been telling my significant other that a break in Scotland would do us good. He's been a bit overworked, and few days total R&R at the begining of June in the wilds of Allt Mhuic at Loch Arkaig (20 miles north of Fort William) would make me very happy. ( shhh, Chequered Skipper!!!) D...
