Re: Net Rage

Weirdly one of the worst photos I have ever seen of a battered butterfly in a boring composition, unsharp and dull got a vote - what the hell is going on there Annie? Roger Sorry, I have just started photographing - not just butterflies but anything. I didn't ask anyone to vote for me and I didn't ...

Re: August 2008

The weather's put paid to much activity here - but I did see a brace of Small Torts geting battered about at lunchtime, and a few Large Whites visiting the baskets during the (very short) breaks between the rain

Yes...that's what I meant :D

I can think of much more interesting things to spend half an hour doing. Watching Ray Mears' Wild Food, for instance.

Dave, have you ever smelt an adult male lion? euuuuuuuuggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! Plus, all that running around chasing after your food - far too much effort! Much better to come back as a creature that can find sex whenever it wants, where food is easy to come by, full of sugars and fats...

Re: I have seen a lot of these this year, and ideas ?

Half an hour? No wonder they spend a lot of their time lying down... And presumably this means there's a dedicated team of scientists somewhere who've stood with stop watches waiting for the poor piggies to, um, finish?Reincarnation as a beetle sounds much better - a nice life in the fresh air with ...

Re: Recording your Sightings

If you have a phone with internal GPS, like the Nokia N95 (which I own and am enjoying greatly) then you can purchase this bit of kit http://www.viewranger.com/vrproductinfo.php which will give you your OS grid ref positions as you move around. Not cheap (about £150 for the full shebang, less if you...

lots of Large Whites today at work, and I just rescued a Southern Hawker (I think) which had been trying to cop. with a VW Golf and ended upside down in a puddle. It's now drying out nicely on the hanging lobelia :D

Re: 'Britain's Got Talent' (For Butterflies)

Dear Points Of View I would like to complain about the BBC spending our licence fee on such fripperies as were shown on The One Show on 29th August 2008. I am not referring, of course, to the Purple Emperor banquet, which was of course an important scientific experiment carried out in controlled sur...

Re: August 2008

Just had my first Hummingbird Hawk Moth of 2008 around the hanging baskets at work - by the time I'd finished my phone conversation and run outside to have a clsoer look it had buggered off :(

The Pentax Papilio came highly recommended to me by a butterfly watcher last week - I've been looking around the internet and you can get them for as little as £85

Re: A butterfly watcher's tale (with a happy ending)

I've never been lucky enough to have a dog, though I have had cats and several rabbits, guinea pigs and fancy rats. I sob copiously when pets pass away, and in fact last night had a little sniffle when remembering dear Mittens the cat who died at 16 years old. I named several of the rabbits and guin...

I was driving round Somerset for most of yesterday - had two Gatekeepers in West Huntspill, A Red Admiral in Glastonbury, a Great Diving Beetle in flight near Street and another Red Admiral on Weston Super Mare sea front, while stuck in traffic - hope the poor little bugger didn't hang around, he mi...
