Re: Daily Quiz
Ok, here's one - Even if you don't know the answer you can probably make an educated guess! The question relates to my local stomping ground Which member of family Lycaenidae is pictured on the information board at the foot of Brean Down in Somerset? Sorry that it's not more of an exciting question!...

Re: Is it just me...
As well as being vulgar and exploitative as Guy stated, I also think it's rather odd. I would imagine the mortality rate before release is rather high - after all, in the run-up to the average wedding, there's so much going on, I can see piles of little boxes being left to get overly hot or cold whi...

Re: June Butterflies
We put our hanging baskets up at work on Monday, and with today's sunshine they've already attracted some Small Tortoiseshells and Small Whites. Went for a walk past some very pretty gardens behind my work at lunchtime and saw one Red Admiral. After that I walked up to the beach to see if there were...

Re: Butterfly dreams
I know this is a bit of a "bump" for this thread, but I'm just working my way through a lot of the older stuff About two years ago I had a very clear dream about visiting a bungalow to see an elderly man - and he was raising Camberwell Beauties in his (beige painted) hallway. They were fly...

Is it just me...
...or is this a bit weird? I heard through the wonderful medium of Heat Magazine that Wayne Rooney and Colleen Mcloughlin intended to have live butterflies released by each guest at their wedding - and I wondered to myself how it works... so I went to Google and lo, Google found the details for me; ...

Re: Daily Quiz
the answer to a) is Bread And Butterfly! - I realised last night that it's in the Disney film version, which goes under the name of "Wonderland" but uses lots of aspects from "Looking Glass"
still not a clue on question b, though I guess it's something to do with Tenniel?

I presume that last sentence means the answer to a) is to be found in Alice Through The Laudanum... sorry, Looking Glass? Again, I read it but never quite "got" it...

Too wet for me to get out on Sunday, and back at work since then. I know it's moths, but had a few Brimstone moths around at work and home - and very attractive they are too!

Re: May Butterflies
I was intending to get out to Sand Point north of Weston Super Mare on Saturday, but there was a heavy sea-mist which put me off - so pootled down the road to my mother's house where Speckled Woods were enjoying the odd sunny spells, basking on the purple irises in her wildlife pond. I wish I had a ...

Re: Daily Quiz
Is the first question a reference to Lewis Carroll's branches of arithmetic in Alice's Adventures In Wonderland? I never liked the book, but remember the quote of "ambition, distraction, uglification and derision" (I think) - but the only lepidopteral reference the I can recall in "Wo...

Moth nest on BBC West
I know it's moths not butterflies, but this was featured on BBC Points West two nights ago http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/gloucestershire/7424760.stm and the nice smiley lady who reads the news described it as a "spiders web" before going on to describe it being filled with caterpillars

you've got more copies of Notes and Views than me - so I think you're eminently more qualified to answer that question!Felix wrote:The first question could be IRP Heslop (am I correct Annie?)

Re: Daily Quiz
gosh, I knew there was a reason I spent the hot summer of 1997 sat in French A-Level exams  I'm also inclined to think that the SWF is more "toast of the town" than "tobacco", and the context "tabac d'espagne" rather than "tabac espagnol" would lead me fu...

Tell more about growing up with drawers of pinned specimens, that's genuinely interesting...was a member of your family a collector..? (only if you don't mind me asking...) Of course I don't mind you asking! My Grandfather was a prolific collector of butterflies up until his death in the early seve...

Re: May Butterflies
Tried Brean Down near Weston Super Mare this afternoon as the sun was shining. The whole place is carpeted in yellow vetch, white rock-rose (Helianthemum apenninum, which grows there and in south Devon only I believe) and buttercups. What it wasn't blessed with today was butterflies, probably due to...

Hello from a Newbie!
Hello, my name is Annie and I've always had more than a passing interest in butterflies (growing up with drawers of pinned specimens tends to fire a girl's enthusiasm, especially before she's old enough to understand that butterflies are better on-the-wing than under-the-pin). Now I'm looking to inc...
