Re: May 2013

Re: Archiving digital image files

I go with data backed up on 2 external HDs. Just purchased one from PC World. 2TB WD for £90. Video was mentioned earlier. I try and back up that which is currently in use or from recently produced DVD's etc but have all video on miniDV. Never re-use the tapes. Not sure how long they will last as s...

Re: Archiving digital image files

I managed to bugger up a drive full of pics by pluggling in the lead from my laptop into it ! 20v instead of 12 I did try changing the chassis and power supply but it was US Probably rescueable if you need to - likelihood is that the physical drive will be OK but it's circuitry is fried, so just a ...

Re: Archiving digital image files

Something that I've begun to use are the online archiving systems of which there appear to be a bewildering number nowadays - used to use Carbonite but now use Dropbox and SugarSync. Great for getting images to people (though I tend to use YouSendIt for that!)

LOL! No worries! Checked out Mike's site - great to revisit all those Welsh scenes where I've been (and photo'd - but not nearly so well! ) - having lived in Penarth (just outside Cardiff) for many years :)

Re: Filling the void

I have, over the past 2 or 3 weeks, been inadvertantly casting glances at promising looking landscapes whenever I've been driving (not really to be recommended when on the two lane section of the M4 near Port Talbot). Rocky outcrops with shrub and bracken laden slopes are particularly intriguing an...

Re: Helicon Focus

A little late to the discussion but I've been known to use both stacking and Helicon Focus - but not much of late as I've not been out much with the MP-e 65mm where the technique really comes into it's own! Having said that, I quite often use a stacking technique for 'ordinary' macros where I've tak...

Re: Sigma 105 handheld vs 150 tripod mounted

I do occasionally use fill-in flash but it does mean taking my EM-140 with me. I take two types of shot: reference, "good", all-in-focus (where fill-in can be useful) and then the more interesting comp where light tends to play a very active part and I use existing light, exactly the same ...

Re: cheap stick-on close-up lens for camera phones

Has anyone tried one of these? Looks like a fun couple of addons - think I'd go for both! But I guess I'd emphasise "fun" as I think that's really all they'd be capable of capturing Here's a shot of my well-shot Mr Squeak taken with a mobile phone (SE k750i) - you can see the distortion u...

Re: Archiving digital image files

Coming to this a little late but my solution is (and has been for 25+ years!) backing up to hard disk. I used to use separate systems, networked, but now use external hard disks. Being in the business I've used every known method - floppy, hard disk, CD (R and RW), DVD (+/- and RAM), tape, flash car...

Re: Butterflies (or the lack of)

Loads of Large Skippers and Common Blues a week or so ago, here in the Peak District - and at altitude (relative!) around the 1,000 foot mark (along with loads of Burnets). A few Red Admirals, very few Whites of any sort, the occasional Peacock, quite a few Speckled Woods, Ringlets, Meadow Browns an...

Re: New Canon Camera

As an Ex Skoda (Felicia) owner I can only say you can't really compare it to a BMW - especially as I survived a 60 mph crash (no airbags) into another car in it. Yes I was quite badly injured - but we survived due to the Skoda design. So I guess, using that analogy above, explains why I too went fo...

Re: New Canon Camera

My (somewhat poor) anaology would be to compare Skodas with BMWs. They both get to where they need to go equally effectively - arguably the BMWs are better made and better looking but they are a lot more expensive. But also remember: no one likes BMW drivers! I can compare the Canon 100mm (no...

Re: Sigma 105 handheld vs 150 tripod mounted

Personally, I find no difference between using the 105 vs 150 whether handheld or tripoded other than the 150 with it's tripod collar is quick and easy to change from landscape to portrait mode! I use both and have gradually changed from tripod most to handhold virtually all - one advantage has defi...

Re: Tamron 90mm with 1.4X converter.

Yeah, I occasionally use my PRO300 1.4x with the Sigma 105mm but usually I want to get closer (as in bigger as I've the 150mm to get further back) so resort to tubes! I think the DGX is relatively new and commands the higher prices - I've the older DG with which I've no probs (I find I lose 1 stop) ...

Re: New Canon Camera

If you think 105mm @ 1:1 is close, then try a 65mm @ 5:1! Always interesting how others find using various items of gear - I actually prefer the 105 over the 150 for both it's short travel, rapid MF (I always seem to get "lost" focussing the 150) and I can use slower shutter speeds. Prefer...

Can't answer the question for you, Rik but can say that I've had some good macros out of my 7D (teamed up with a Sigma 105, 150 or Canon MPe 65)!
