Re: Advice for novice

I use both the Sigma 105mm and the 150mm and I'd make the following comparisons: 105mm focuses at about 12cm closest, barrel extends to focus, two stage change from AF to MF (gear change and switch) but results in easy/small rotation to manually focus 150mm focuses at about 15cm closest, internal fo...

Re: Digital sharpening and resolution, upload advice

One of the techniques I've used with some success, as mentioned earlier, is High Pass sharpening (I've actually never used USM). On final sized-for-web image: In the Layers window, right click the Background to make a Background Copy Filters, Other, High Pass Set to between 0.7 and 1.5 (varies treme...

Re: August 2008 Votes

And are all those Speed Cameras to be trusted? It would seemingly be the easiest thing in the world to alter the supposed read-out to earn more money for the local authority. Easier for them to "accidentally" allow them to lose the calibration of the flash timing (they flash twice and tim...

Re: August 2008 Votes

I would like to shoot in RAW, so that I can edit some of this out, but I wouldn't know where to start. Any help would be appreciated. You don't actually alter RAW files but process them to produce an image which you can then edit (so no different to if you shot it as a JPG to begin with!). RAW just...

Re: August 2008 Votes

I had always assumed that if a photo is needed as forensic evidence, eg picture of a crime scene or an immigrant Queen of Spain flying over the cliffs of Dover, then if has to be clear from the EXIF that it is an un-altered original as a modified photo that still shows the EXIF could be used to fal...

Re: August 2008 Votes

Markulous - For me this one was nearly but not quite superb. The composition I love, the colours I love, but the fine detail isn’t quite as I had hoped. Perhaps I’m being a bit picky with this one, but with such a simple composition (which works really well) I look for the detail. Perhaps it’s a he...

Re: Which 'macro lens' advise

When using a macro, am i on top of the butterfly or shooting from a range that won't scare the butterfly away. Sigma 105mm Minimum Focusing Distance 31.3cm/12.3 in. Sigma 150mm Minimum Focusing Distance 38.0cm/15.0 in So, yup, pretty close! :D (but the minimum is for 1:1, so to get all butterfly in...

..... and just he one lens , a Canon 28-135 IS USM - but just cant get sharp macro shots on it......... It would be nice to hear from other 400D users how they are getting on with the 150 on this body, and also, if they have the same problems that i have using the 28-135 at its macro end. Think you...

Re: Which 'macro lens' advise

I'm on my 2nd Sigma 105mm (have one on my Sigma SD10 - still to get better shots with my current 350D) and use it in preference to Sigma 150mm as the manual focus is so much easier even if it doesn't have a tripod collar for swift switching between landscape/portrait when I'm tripoded. I've also use...

Re: Nuisance dogs

An enjoyable thread - a pity some dog owners can't be encouraged to read it! As a dog owner (German Shepherd) I'll quickly add that she's usually on a lead (when there's likely to be anyone around), we clear up after her and I never expect all and sundry to tolerate dogs - as in the dreaded "Sh...
