Re: Image Storage Problems
Until this last October i had been storing my digital images on USB keys. Then i was persuaded to get an external hard drive. I transferred all of my wildlife images to this £100 external hard drive, and was delighted with its convenient usefulness. It is fortunate that i retained all of my little ...

Arrived back early this morning - calendars all here, many thanks, with no one "borrowing" or recycling any! Phew! ![Wink ](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)

Re: Sigma 105 handheld vs 150 tripod mounted
Whilst I do tend to aim for tripod-ing a shot, there's absolutely no doubt that some of my better shots are without (the two shots in this/next year's calendars are examples). Downside to my using a tripod is that I can faff around, over-analysing the composition and manage to suck out any interest ...

Re: Sigma 105 handheld vs 150 tripod mounted
Same setup as Pete (105 and 150) and use them in exactly the same way. Much prefer the 105mm handheld.
I'm vaguely considering the Canon 100mm IS but it's a lot to pay for 2 stops! One problem is that I'd have to return to Canon (whereas I'm now using Sigma to get my wildlife macros)![Rolling Eyes ](./images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif)

Re: Non-digital 105mm Sigma Macro : Why so expensive?
They also had similar issues in the past with their flashes not working on newer DSLR's... That's the chanxce you take with any 3rd party manufacturer really. I know when these compatibility issues have arisen they've been quite quick to offer a fix but I'm not sure what if any charge there is for ...

Re: Non-digital 105mm Sigma Macro : Why so expensive?
Whilst I have no idea why that lens is quoted at $1K (I bought my first, brand new Sigma AF fit, for £205 - still produces better pics than the same Canon fit lens - but that's down to the camera!), it really doesn't make that much difference whether it's DG or not. I've been using DG and non-DG len...

Re: UK Butterflies 2010 Calendar
I'm a bit late with ordering this year but can you put me down for 3, Gary? And can I transfer the money directly, as last year, to the same account (I'm especially nervous of the post these days tho prefer direct anyway!)?

Re: Ring Flash
I have been known to occasionally use a Sigma EM-140 DG - always as just fill-in and very very lightly if wildlife. I've also used the Marumi (my partner has one) which, whilst it does a perfectly capable job, isn't as flexible as the Sigma

Re: Tripod head
I'll certainly consider that idea, but it would probably be higher than i want. My tripod head is roughly 3ins high. I need a spike about 6ins long, with four of those in the ground. Although i have got a bean bag, i would like the extra stability, and the b&s precision. Also, i find a bean bag...

Re: Tripod head
My tripod has a pistol grip 'joystick' clone one end and a simple ballhead the other on my Benbo Trekker, so I have the best of both worlds! Find they both work extremely well (and wear on pistol grip is no prob, just requires the occasional tightening) - usage is usually pistol grip: landscapes, wa...

Re: New Canon 100mm macro
WE selling these for £999 - that's £500/stop! Cheaper to get a decent lower noise camera - perhaps I should change to Nikon now (only semi-serious as I've just acquired another Sigma - back to taking pics like I used to take 'em!)? And I most definitely do use my 300mm f/4 IS for shooting bi...

Re: Upgrading..500D maybe
No Mark, reminds me of that Sigma 170-500 that Lisa had, yuk. Oh? You've tried it? OK, the OS is relatively noisy, zoom ring is stiff and build is less than spectacular (but perfectly acceptable!) but a small price for better reach, close to equal image quality, 1-2 stops better OS, a sensibl...

Re: Upgrading..500D maybe
I use the 100-400mm and 300mm - like the push-pull of the zoom (for simultaneous zoom/manual focus) and the prime for the quality. We wanted to get another zoom and in the end went for the new(ish) Sigma 150-500mm and have to say I really love it and prefer it over the 100-400mm. Partly the extra re...

I've only had a few come through here, not too surprising as we're 300m up but every single one has headed East - as if they knew that in that direction it was downhill and probably better feeding

Re: Photo compression
I think that my query has something to do with the title! I was wondering what causes the slight aberration that I, and others, sometimes get on their photos when they are downloaded to a website. The distortion I mean is the "crinkling" or spotting (don't know how to really describe it) ...
