Red Admiral or Painted Lady?

I found this butterfly in my image collection which I think I have wrongly named. Could someone please help me by confirming, or otherwise, my ID? http://www.imageinuk.com/Butterflies/Nymphalidae/Painted-Lady-Vanessa-cardui/8095407/964230789_WJEjU-XL.jpg . I had named this a Painted Lady. Thank you

Re: Image Stabilisation.

PeterD. Roundwood123 doesn't have a lot of lenses as he is talking about compact cameras. :) @Roundwood123, image stabilisation works in all modes as well as macro modes on the Ixus range. The real difficulty with most compacts' macro modes is that, because they usually only work to the fullest ext...

Re: Just really starting out with D-SLR

Some of the early Sony A700 models had problems with front or back focussing. You can check this by setting your camera up on a tripod. Balance three coins on their edge at the camera height overlapping each other so that they are at slightly different distances from the camera. Use a lens with the...

Re: Just really starting out with D-SLR

Thanks Dave, I will try a few shots on tripod, usually use handheld. Making myself a nice monopod, so that should be better for what I want. Will test camera and post a few shots next week when I have more time, too much important stuff happening to use my camera. Good luck and look forward to your...

Re: Image Stabilisation.

Thanks for the information Peter, i am looking to update my camera this summer and i think i will probably stick with the Canon ixus range, they have a number with IS. Steve. That makes a lot of sense Steve. You already presumably have lenses and to change mounts could be very expensive. The reason...

Re: Image Stabilisation.

I have noticed that many of the new compact digital cameras have image stabilisation, do any of you know if IS works in macro mode, if it does it would sure help in producing a good quality picture. Steve Hi Steve, As you say, there are a variety of makes that incorporate in-body IS systems. The de...

Re: Why I shoot raw

Hi all, What you are doing in photoshop, in my opinion, would be better applied in-camera. With a white butterfly, as with white birds, it would be better to reduce the exposure using the compensation control when taking the shot. This will reduce the amount of PP work. Remember that, depending on y...

Re: A very versatile lens

Each to their own Peter D, :D but I would say a Macro lens, is the best lens to use for Macro photography. Gruditch Unless it's a Canon 100-400L IS with extension tubes of course  http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v520/V6GTO/Butterflies/Long-tailedBlue-AndaluciaSpain-Sep0.jpg http://im...

Re: A very versatile lens

You are correct of course :D . My preference for this approach though is that I can still take images without too much stalking and if I want more detail then I just crop to get it. I have tried Macro lenses but found that I lost too many opportunities due to my lack of stalking skills.

Re: Something else to focus in on

The fly there, I took many pics of it and only 3 came out at all. It was tough to focus in on as either the back of it blurred, front blurred or fly on bottom blurred. Dave, If you reduce the aperture then you will increase the dof. Try for something like f8 - f10. You can afford to reduce your shu...

Re: Just really starting out with D-SLR

Dave, Thanks for posting. A couple of things spring to mind. I always use single spot (centre target) for focusing. The reason for this is that I want to be absolutely sure that I focus accurately on the body of the butterfly. The dof will ensure the rest of the butterfly is also in focus. I do not ...

Re: A very versatile lens

I use the Olympus E3 an recently purchased the Sigma 50-500 lens for bird photography. During my birding expeditions, I have used this camera/lens combination for a few butterfly shots. See my post at http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2032&p=10720#p10720. These shots ...

Re: Just really starting out with D-SLR

Dave,

Why are you describing your results as poor? It would be very helpful if you could post some images so that we could constructively review them and pass comments and advice on how to improve them. If you do post some images, don't forget to include the exif data.

Re: IS in Camera or IS in lens?

Just to join in this debate, I own an Olympus E3 which has in-body IS. The attached shot was taken hand held 1/10s @ f4 ISO 1000 and fl 60mm. It is a good demonstration of what in-body IS can achieve. I also use Sigma lenses and IS works well with these and my Zuiko lenses. The stabalisation takes i...
