Re: 8 W actinic Heath moth trap

You can get a 40w tube for this type of trap, which will still run off a jelly acid battery. You will need an inverter to convert 12V to 240V to make the 40W Heath trap portable, together with a 12v battery of at least 24ah. Shop here (it's where Alana get their stock anyway). Heath (actinic) traps ...

Hi Chris, See this thread: http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3968&p=30788&hilit=+supper#p30788 ...which should go some way to address at least part of your question. Please try to look past the 'climate change' hijack (the world's most jumped on band wagon  )...

Hi Nick, While I am not going to dispute for one moment your 'master tree' theory, it's worth mentioning that laurel has been recorded as a larval food plant of this species (well, the developing fruits in any case). Certainly cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) has been recorded as a host plant, co...

Following a tip off of an explosion in numbers this year I predicted this on UKB in my post of Feb 25th... http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=4912&start=20 The signs are that this Spring could be amazing for certain species. Just wait until the Marsh Frits emerge, if t...

If anyone captures an image of red admirals in cop that would be a real scoop. As far as I am aware, mating in this species has been observed (and recorded) in Blighty on only a couple of occiasions.

Re: Tics

The ICZN makes no provision for changing sensibilities. I wonder what the most politically incorrect binomial is... How about Natica josephine (a marine snail). Innocent sounding to most, but in Italy, natica means 'buttock', and Josephine is a derogatory term for The Pope. The imp-ish little twerp...

Why do I know it as 'withershins'?

(I don't really 'do' google, but if somebody else would like to investigate the etymology (I can't locate my copy of C.T.Onions) I would be grateful).

Re: Tics

I used to always get deer tics on me whenever I went out, particularly if I was on Shapwick Heath, the New Forest, or any downland in Wilts or Dorset. I have had countless numbers on me over the years. I never used to worry about them too much, and just whipped them off with a pair of forceps or lef...

David Cameron famously said it best on 'Absolute Radio' when interviewed by local radio presenter Christian O'Connell:
