Re: September 2008 votes

It seems everyone wants to get in on this critique lark now!

Still, the more critique, the more we learn how we can improve :)

Re: September 2008 votes

Thanks for the clarification Colin. As I suspected (and hoped!) :) Thanks to everyone for the votes. Congratulations to xmilehigh for winning and to Pete for a great capture of a hard to find subject. Congratulations also to everyone else who entered for pushing us all to improve our photography fur...

Re: Butterfly Magazine

Yep. Nice surprise :)

I had given a load of pics to Fran Southgate who runs the Denge Woods conservation project here in kent so she has been liberally sprinkling my images in things this year :)

Re: Kashmir

Nope but I'd be interested to hear of your findings both on the butterfly and the fishing front. Is that North India Mahseer fishing? I have heard that it's damn hard work in the North but a real adventure fishing location! I was tempted to go for the adventure alone a couple of years back. Be warne...

Re: September 2008 votes

Scarce Copper FISHiEE Stunning shot – something to aspire to. Hate to say it but I bet it’ll be the butterfly that lets you down in the voting. Really good critique. Just curious as to what exactly was meant by mine? That a non-native species might get less votes or there was a technical issue with...

Re: September 2008

2nd brood white admiral obeserved and photographed for an hour yesterday near my home just on the south kent/sussex border near rye. hope to post some photos later. They're still on the camera at the moment. First time I have seen a 2nd brood white admiral, and where I saw it any more than 2-3 in a ...

Re: August 2008 Votes

The jpeg produced by a dslr also has that 'photoshop' work applied to it, but it's more controlable and can be turned fully off if desired. Pauline - I'd probably have done exactly the same. I've never seen a purple hairstreak wings open either! Probably if you'd had a go at that one first the expos...

Re: August 2008 Votes

hehe sometimes I only come back with a bad image and that's all I have to work with. I am thinking for example when I was on holiday with a new camera in Uganda. I took a load of photos all quite badly under exposed as my 10D used to expose much brighter than the new 30d. I couldn't go back and re-t...

Re: August 2008 Votes

My only qualification is experience of 5 years or so of amateur photography and probably 100k+ photos. I don't have any kind of paper qualification in photography, but I am pretty well experienced enough that if I see for example someone shoots an image on a 100mm macro lens at 1/50s and it's a blur...

Re: August 2008 Votes

jackharr: I was only interested in the exif data to see equipment and settings used to understand what went on to produce the image and then advise, if necessary, how to change things to get better results. For example I could see if blur was due to too low shutter speed etc. and advise on how to co...

Re: August 2008 Votes

On the one hand, you call for tighter crops in some of the images and then with others you say no EXIF data. You seem to want it both ways. I always keep the original complete with EXIF but I haven't a clue how to preserve that when a photo has subsequently been cropped. Jack Jack - I'm not sure wh...

Re: August 2008 Votes

Sorry for the delay. Went away for a few days last week and today was my first real chance to get down and do this. Seems I got a little carried away! Not done any critique like this before so hopefully it's ok. I hope I've not been too harsh on anyone. I've generally judged them as I would my own w...

Re: August 2008 Votes

Yes, I actually like the new way of viewing the pics actually using the click to progress to the next image method. I scroll through them this way, to select my favourites, then look back to the thumbnails at the end to get the authors. You can judge on composition just from the thumbnails to some e...

Re: August 2008 Votes

Unless it's changed for this month, you are only able to see the scores once you have voted. I believe the values were blank this month before I voted also.

Re: August 2008 Votes

Ah... I wasn't sure TBH pete. I dodn't usually leave it until the last minute so only skimmed the rules quickly a couple of days back to see what the date was. I guess 'until the 5th' could be taken as the start or the end really... I'll take the offer of re-entering it next month though if I don't ...

Re: August 2008 Votes

Whoops. I just added an entry and then came here to suss out how voting for this new system works and realise that it must be open fior entries until the start of the 5th rather than the end of the 5th. Guess I should have got my act together sooner. I'll have to wait until the themed comps now to s...

Re: July 2008 Votes

Just returned from Switzerland to see I am the winner :) All 3 of the images I voted for only recieved 3-4 votes this month so I guess there are so many good shots in these comps now that even a great shot can get a low score. That or it was very late when I voted and my eyesight was going! Thanks t...

Re: No Butterflies in Iceland

Oh I see. you mean what you saw wasn't an Arran Brown? Ok, well I wasn't suggesting it was being as it was brown and not white! I did see one variation on a green veined white up there but only two of these. In general, the moths there were very small. About the size of a Common Blue perhaps and ver...
