Re: Birdfair

I remember first time I tried my canon 70-200F4 IS I was amazed at how good the latest canon IS was compared the old IS on my 100-400. You could see the lens was so much more stable through the viewfinder. In fact I found it hard to get a slow enough shutter speed to see camera shake in the shots. T...

Re: Birdfair

I got "hands on" with the Sigma 150 Macro with Optical Stabilisation. What a superb bit of kit. I took a handheld shot at 1:1 and at 1/100th sec., and zoomed right in to the centre where there was no discernible camera shake - extraordinary. If I drop enough hints (like I haven't already ...

Re: July 2011 Competition

It took maybe 10 seconds to do the sharpening. It's about the simplest of things you can do.

A great photo is 30% field craft, 10% camera craft, 10% computer craft, 50% luck :)

Re: July 2011 Competition

Congratulations to Julian. A well deserved win! :) Brown Hairstreak are a species that have alluded me this year due to little free time, and little co-operation from the weather grr!! Nigel's open winged Marbled white was my favourite this month - a real stunner. I also thought Suzie's Chalkhill Bl...

Re: Latest must-have gear for Small Skippers

In France I have photographed butterflies with several of these attached. They must be quite annoying for the butterflies as they prevent them from properly rolling up their proboscis and you often see them trying unsuccessfully to remove them.

None at Old Winchester Hill on trips at Sunset Thursday and Sunrise Saturday. Plenty of newly emerged Marbled Whites though :)

Re: Sharpening

I used to use High Pass also, but then forgot about it. I recently wentback to look at it and see how it compares to smart sharpen in CS4 and couldn't really see any difference, so think to use Smart Sharpen (at least in CS4) is equally as effective but far simpler. Having said that though, I'll che...

Re: Goldie M Adonis

Hi Goldie, Lydden and Temple Ewell Nature reserve is where you're after: http://www.kentwildlifetrust.org.uk/reserves/dover-downland-complex/lydden-temple-ewell-james-teacher-reserve/ It's got Adonis Blues. I wouldn't say masses, but they are there. The place has thousands of Chalkhill Blues plus Co...

Re: Large Black Butterfly

I'd say Peacock, Red Admiral and also Small Tortoiseshell are all butterflies that regularly end up indoors and are predominantly black/dark with wings closed. If there was little colour visible when flying then probably Red Admiral is most likely.

Re: Sharpening

Ah yes... the group is growing slowly :)

Fishing has well and truly taken second place to butterflies for me these days, in fact I rarely go fishing in the UK now, but I'm off to Norway in search of Halibut next month for my one fishing trip of the year :)

Re: Sharpening

Afraid photoshop is all mumbo jumbo to me, could not understand it so deleted it from my pc. I have an old copy of paint shop pro 5 & no idea what most of it if for. So I just alter the brightness & contrast in psp5, if I cannot get an image I like in a couple of clicks the photo is deleted...

Re: Sharpening

I know practically nothing about photography, but that Glanville underside image is truly stunning (why do the antennae look so different though?) Thanks :) I hadn't noticed the antennae before. Normally the inside and outside edges would be similar but with Glanvilles this isn't the case it seems....

Re: June 2011 Competition

Something I never noticed before... In the comments screen, which is also the screen where you vote, the images aren't displayed at the full 800 pixel size, but are in fact reduced in size slightly to maximum 768 pixels high it looks like, and reducing the quality slightly as a result. I might be be...

Re: May 2011 Competition

Wow I was quite surprised to get to the top this month with all the other great images entered :) Have to say I was quite pleased to get my swall.owtail shot with 2 of my 3 days in Norfolk wrecked by the weather and only getting 3 hours on the last day with any chance of photos. My first ever visit ...

Re: Sharpening

I use photoshop CS4 and use the Smart Sharpen tool which gives a much more natural looking effect (ie not over the top) compared th the Unsharp Mask. I use a radius of 0.3, maybe sometimes 0.4 (the lower the figure the less harsh the result). The amount depends a bit from image to image but usually ...

Re: Purple Emperor

Darn it. I know a fishing guide in Uganda that leads Gorilla Treks in Rwanda. If only I'd realised Gorilla thumbs were the thing to have I could have got him to ship me a load over. Too late now dammit!

Will have to make do with whatever I can scrape up on the walk there instead.
