Perhaps if you do see any heading south you could ask the ones with the extra white spots to veer westward a little and pass through North Somerset

Still looking, and wondering
This thread seems to have dried up of late, but I wonder if the situation has been fully resolved. Since David's initial posting I have been carefully looking at RAs, but I've yet to see one with the white spot - for example, I saw 5 at the weekend and 6 this lunchtime, but none of them show it. Exa...

Hazelbury
Hi Eccles, Following your previous posts mentioning Hazelbury Common I have already made a couple of visits and was luck enough to find the Common Blues, Chalkhill Blues and Adonis Blues all in flight, as well as Small Copper (my favourite). So thanks! The Butterflies of Wiltshire by Fuller, which h...

Thanks Pete. I'll send in the details. For the record it was April 18th, and the photo was taken near the Lodge in the Dorset Wildlife Trust reserve on the Island. I feel a bit of an idiot not noticing what I was looking at at the time, and also for not getting round to checking my photos for so lon...

Large tortoiseshell?
Spent a bit of time sorting out a backlog of photos over the weekend, including some from a trip to Brownsea Island chasing red squirrels back in April. This snap caught my eye since I have not seen many tortoiseshells this year - and I can't help thinking it might actually be a Large Tortoiseshell....

SWF near Bath
The picture of the SWFs was taken at Inwood - ST800630. It is a very good site for them in July. The brambles along the eastern edge of the wood (public footpath) are the best place to find them - I believe the wood itself is private. There are also Purple Hairstreaks in the oaks along the edge of t...

Any tips on how to identify this? It's either a Chalkhill or an Adonis Blue, I think.

How far do meadow browns roam
I've been seeing a very distinctive meadow brown for the last couple of weeks in my local patch - it has largish white regions on both upper and lower sides of its hind wings - see the photos below for the appearance with wings closed. I've only got a grainy picture of it with its wings open, so I'l...

Brown Hairstreak at Hatch Hill
I saw a single Brown Hairstreak when passing through Hatch Hill last Saturday - could easily be combined with a visit to Gilling Down, which I don't know. From the entrance at ST495337 keep to the track along the base of the hill. Keep your eyes open for the sheep's skeleton - the BH was hanging aro...
