dingy skipper + wall brown

First Dingy Skipper of the year in the old quarry on the Bath Golf course circuit - three weeks earlier than last year. And a Wall Brown at Cross Plain (Somerset) on Saturday. Remarkable. http://www.bath.ac.uk/~pyssc/butterflies/dingy_skipper_16-IV-07.jpg Canon PowerShot A85 +250D close-up lens hand...

honorary butterfly species!

Exceptional numbers of Peacock butterflies around Bath at the moment. Also, many patches of green alkanet are being devoured by caterpillars of the day-flying Scarlet Tiger moth - promises to be a good year for them. Not quite in the same league as Peacocks maybe, but at the risk of being controvers...

Moth

Sorry for being slightly off-topic with this moth ID, but I've noticed that previous queries regarding moths have been answered. Found the moth below in the kitchen on Sunday. My money is on it being an Angle Shades, but the wing shape is slightly different from pictures I've seen in books, the body...

Some good spots on Sunday: Peacock, Red Admiral, Small Tortoiseshell and Brimstone in the garden and the fields behind the house in west Bath. Matsukaze: have you been down to the old quarry yet this year? At the far exit (away from the Uni) turn right and there is a clearing immediately at the top ...

Peacock

A tatty and forlorn peacock seen in the old Bathampton Quarry today - but my first butterfly of the year so a very welcome sight.

More swiss butterflies

As promised/threatened. Any help much appreciated. Apologies for the quality. All taken in July, central Switzerland, between 1500 and 1800m. http://www.bath.ac.uk/~pyssc/butterflies/unk1.jpg http://www.bath.ac.uk/~pyssc/butterflies/unk2.JPG http://www.bath.ac.uk/~pyssc/butterflies/unk3.JPG http://w...

Only on Sundays!

The other six days you'd have been working down the local pit http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/phpBB2/w ... 006&day=21.

And you'd not have your digital compact to capture the moment.

Hi Pete, Thanks very much. Such a quick response too - I'll have to post some of the others that I've failed to identify to date. On a technical issue, can you provide any advice on the best way of reducing images down in size. The second image, for example, has fringes around both the leadin...

Swiss butterflies

Hi Folks, I would welcome any suggestions for the IDs of these butterflies, taken last July in the Swiss alps. I was unduly pessimistic in my previous posting on 14th Nov. On Dec 2nd this peacock was sunbathing on the front wall and feeding from a hebe that still has many purple flowers on it. The sun was strong enough to cast shadows, but it was surprisingly cold for a butterfly to be in flight. Simon C htt...

Also a red admiral heading west out of Bath, around 11ish.

Unlikely to be the same one seen by eccles, unless it really got a move on.

This one kept me company whilst tidying the garden on Saturday. I've got an awful feeling it could be the last butterfly photo of the year. Incidentally, I have found this shrub (Choysia Ternata Sundance) attracts several butterfly species: red admiral, tortoiseshell, small and large white, brimston...

Hello Guy, Welcome to the forum - I've enjoyed very much the postings that you've already made. Curiousity took me to your web site - boy, your year lists make me green with envy. Got any tips for Swiss hot-spots, ideally in the German speaking part, so I can start planning next year's holiday :D Si...

One red admiral today. As with the last few I've seen, it was not far from late flowering ivy. Saw three at the weekend, including - wait for the drum roll - one with white spots on the red bands. That's my first and only, since I've started looking. If the statistics of smallish numbers can be reli...

Peacocks

Wow, what a beautiful day today.

My only sightings on the Bathampton golf course/old quarry circuit were two peacocks, one in flight and one looking in fine shape, basking in the sun.

first butterfly

Here where I live the Brimstone is usually the first. I can still remember looking out of the kitchen window on January 1st 2000 and seeing a male brimstone settling on the Choisya in the garden.

Ebbor Gorge

Monday's West edition of the BBC Insideout programme included a feature on Ebbor Gorge which contained some nice footage of butterflies, including Silver-Washed fritillaries (incl. valezina), Ringlet & Red Admiral [no extra white spot - this is Somerset after all!]. A nice reminder of warm summe...
