Re: Help: Marsh Fritillary sites

Hi Kevin, I can also recommend Strawberry banks. We had a holiday in Gloucestershire a few years ago and this is where I saw my first marsh fritillaries. Also here were my first green hairstreak and small blues. It is a lovely site (as long as nobody has developed it yet!!). We parked near the schoo...

Re: July 2013

Spent the last two days butterflying (Sunday at Prees Heath for late Silver Studded Blues and Whixall Moss for Large Heath) and then yesterday at Arnside Knott and Meathop Moss. Very hot yesterday with lots of large fritillaries whizzing around on rocket fuel!! Thought I was too early for Scotch Arg...

Link here http://www.southwestscotland-butterflies.org.uk/species/butterflies/dark-green-fritillary.shtml We visited end May and found a fantastic place fo...

Re: Bentley Wood this weekend

Hi again - another question for you all! As part of my birthday this year my lovely wife has given me some cash for an overnight stay somewhere and said go anywhere in the UK and see whatever butterflies you want for this Sunday and Monday (21st and 22nd July). Unusually for me I have no idea where ...

Re: Bentley Wood this weekend

Well - what a ridiculously hot weekend!! We went to Dorset first on Saturday to look for Lulworth Skippers - spotted a walk in Durlston Country Park led by John Gilbert so went for that. Managed to see some males and a female - they surprised me by being smaller than I thought and also plainer. Ante...

So no Purple Emperors in Bentley Woods yet then?

Bentley Wood this weekend

Hi all, Long time since I posted anything although I still look from time to time! Reason for this post is we are planning a trip to Durlston and Bentley Wood this weekend, we know that Lulworths are out at Durlston (contact with the rangers there!) but have seen no news of Emperors at Bentley yet. ...

Re: june 2011

Mountain Ringlets - good weather forecast for Sunday (26th) and as MR are one of only two species we have left to see of our native butterflies we thought we would head to Irton Fell - anyone know if they are still flying there? If not there the next best place to see them? We have tried several tim...

Re: Sussex Kipper

Great write up Neil - both myself and Tamsin thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent with you and the others and it is fantastic to know that other people share the same passion for butterflies (and wildlife in general probably). We look forward to seeing some of you again at varous sites - Purple Empe...

Re: Large Blue is now on the wing!

Just a quick note to say how much we enjoyed our day on Collard Hil last Friday - along with Neil (Sussex Kipper), Bill (wilrow) et al. Shame we couldn't get an open wing shot of the Large Blues but it wasn't the day for it I guess. We went back to Priddy Minories in the afternoon as I wanted to get...

Re: Somerset Wood Whites

Well we found Staple Common but no Wood Whites! Met the farmer who farms at Ruttersleigh who told us that the area the FC all Staple Common is not actually Staple common and directed us to a car park at Stape Hill. So we went there to find some what looked like brand new paths with vegetation strimm...

Re: Somerset Wood Whites

Hi Matsukaze, Thanks for the reply - have googled this and found it (also Staple Fitzpaine) Seems the best place to park is at the Forestry Commission entrance off the lane from Staple Hill to Staple Fitzpaine, ST 266158. Now all we need is sun and Wood Whites!! Will let you know tomorrow if we find...

Somerset Wood Whites

Hello - wondered if anyone can help here - we are in Somerset at the moment and wondered about going to Mount Fancy to see Wood Whites. They seem to be flying at the moment (Somerset BC site has reports of them in Somerset though not at Mount Fancy) but have seen some info that they are not at Mount...

Re: Mountain Ringlet

Hi Paul, My wife and I would be very interested as this is one of only three species we have left to see in the UK (traditional UK species that is!). We have tried for them before in the Lakes but defeated by the weather - also tried at Ben Lawers but again defeated by the weather. Third time lucky ...

Hi Celery, Your quote below : Also, nothing illustrates the parlous state of butterflies in Notts. better than Attenborough - where they have cordoned off an area to make a habitat (perhaps, maybe, if we're lucky, in the future) suitable for Common (nothing more exotic than that, I'm afraid) Blues. ...

Glanville Fritillary

Hi - wondered if any sightings have been reported yet of Glanville Fritillary. Off to the Isle of Wight this weekend to see some friends and hoped we may just catch them (seen 3rd May last year) but so far have not found any reports of them. They may be late due to the winter weather. All the best G...
