Hi Pete,

We saw 6 Large Blues there today, including three well to the west of the cordoned-off area. Looks like they are doing well.

Butterfly Conservation have an event scheduled for (I believe) a week Sunday at 11am.

Hi Mark, Roger Sutton's booklet "50 Butterfly Walks in Somerset" will have the details (information on where to obtain this is in the local BC branch newsletter). I would provide the details, but am moving house and the book is somewhere deep in a box and unlikely to surface for a fair whi...

Interesting!

There was a photo of a Marsh Fritillary on BRERC's website until recently captioned as being taken on Bath Golf Course in May 2005; presumably a release.

Hi Martin,

Lovely pics!

I have family not too far away from you, in the hills above Fuengirola. I have yet to try looking for butterflies there, though, mostly because I travel out at the wrong time of year. Where are good places to have a look?

Chris.

Small Blue

There is a potential site for Small Blue near to me. I would like to try and demonstrate that the butterfly is breeding there (if it is, of course). Is searching for larvae in the next couple of months a practical way of doing so?

Hi Mark,

Good to see a 'local' on here.

I understand the best sites in the south-west are on Exmoor (the Somerset part, in particular) rather than Dartmoor.

Hi Andy, Interesting site you have there, and interesting comments on the different sources Horseshoe Vetch too. Can see how this might be a problem for its dependent butterflies. I thought that sourcing of wildflower seed for habitat creation has become more of a consideration - how true is this? H...

Hi Pete, However, I'm not sure if you'd still have much of a "garden" (in the traditional sense) left though My wife-to-be already complains of this... Anyhow, I'd worked out the skippers' requirements as being foodplant, nectar sources, bare patches to bask (flower-beds? paving?) and shru...

Dingy Skipper, Grizzled Skipper and Small Blue

There are small populations of these species near to where I live (north Somerset). Looking at the species profiles on the Butterfly Conservation website, it would appear feasible to encourage these species to breed/set up small colonies in gardens, as part of the local meta-population. Is this prac...
