... waiting for the first Small & Essex Skipper Spoke too soon ... a few hours later an Essex Skipper made himself known and allowed me to take some decent photographs for the first sighting of the year. Once again Essex reliably emerged prior to the Small Skipper - well it is Essex. 2024.06.21...

A general lack of most insects which is concerning. Same here unfortunately - mostly just a few Meadow Brown [rather than the 100s] and Small Heath in the open grassland within the flood plain, waiting for the first Small & Essex Skipper, although finally saw my first Ringlet yesterday. Banded ...

I made a friend today.
Not a good start to flying, but got a helping hand to join in with the fun.

02/06/2024 Meadgate Fields Open Space After visiting a couple of nature reserves to find a lack of butterflies, I had a walk around my local patch to find much more butterfly activity - not a lot but far more entertaining than places you might expect to be more rewarding. I started off by finding a...

Re: David Lazarus
Yes, I think so too - it seems more likely that it is a later first brood emergence from an earlier overwintering stage.

I had a lesson 🤣 🤣🤣 🤣 from the experts on this magnificent butterfly site - thank you to those involved in resolving my 😳! Does anyone know if this is an Angle Shades larva? I am not blessed with the ability to identify one green caterpillar from another. It is around 4-5 cm long and hanging on a grass stem, at a site with plenty of bramble, oaks, other shrubs, as well as a long grass meadow. 2024.06.01 Angle Shades Mea...

01/06/2024 Meadgate Park-Meadgate Fields Open Space-Baddow Meads The sun came out from behind the clouds about 1.30. It was 17 C but a cold wind made it feel colder.
