Ringlet aberration
I saw 3 Ringlets this colour in Cumbria yesterday. Is this unusual or within the normal range? I have never seen them this colour before, even when faded and old.
Thanks for any help,
Sarah.

Re: Mountain Ringlets in Cumbria
Hi Mildheart, Mountain Ringlets have just appeared on Cumbria's sightings page. 1 seen on 8th June and 1 seen on 12th June, both on Irton Fell. They are late this year unsurprisingly. Have you thought about the Kidsty Pike and Bampton Common areas around Haweswater? It depends where you will be base...

Re: Red Admiral feeding on oak apple gall
I saw Red Admirals feeding on Oak apple galls in Norfolk two years ago while looking for Swallowtails. One field margin had a row of Oaks and there were Red Admirals in every tree that had the galls. They appeared to be feeding on a sticky substance.

Re: October 2023
Thank you for your comments David and Dave.
I saw the butterfly again this afternoon. Size and upperside markings were typically Large White. I was just puzzled by the underside markings but I accept they are a variation of normal.

Re: October 2023
I wonder if anyone could comment on this butterfly seen in my garden. When I first saw it I thought it was a Large White, but on closing it's wings it looked more like a GVW. Is this a hybrid, or could it be Ab. Venata seen on this site or a normal variation?
Thanks,
Sarah.
Thanks,
Sarah.

Re: June 2023
Hi Otep, It's great to have you back on UKB :) Your butterfly was asking you to open the door! I have had Robins in my garden that take butterflies. When the Buddleias are in flower they hide in one bush then dive into another. Sometimes the butterflies escape but sadly some get eaten. Sometimes the...

Re: April 2023
Hi David, I agree, it is early but I was desperate to go and look. My first sighting of GH last year (also at Cliburn Moss) was 16th April which was the first GH sighting of the year for Cumbria. It's not as if the weather has been good here, far from it. We were back to a cold & windy day yeste...

Re: April 2023
Saturday 8th - Cliburn Moss NNR A beautiful warm sunny day at last, so decided to go to Cliburn Moss to look for Green Hairstreak. There wasn't much Bilberry about but I managed to find 10 GH around young Pines. They were very active but I managed to find one posing long enough for a quick photo. I ...

Hi David,
Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed, helpful response to Serhiy's request. I am sure he will be very grateful.
Butterflies are so important to me that I felt I wanted to help him in some way. I just didn't know how.
Best wishes,
Sarah.
