Re: A Home For Butterflies

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF A HOME FOR BUTTERFLIES! 2022 is the 25th year of our butterfly garden project, so I thought I would celebrate the anniversary on this site, over several instalments, by choosing photos that best describe the landmark events over the years. It may be a large garden to many but...

Re: Purple Emperor - Favourite Photo of 2021

Both these shots are of males despite no purple showing on the one that looks as if it is perched next to a lake! The one atop the oak was one of four in aerial combat around 6pm. Both Chambers Farm Wood, Lincolnshire.

Re: Purple Hairstreak - Favourite Photo of 2021

I have chosen this photo because it is another of those stumbling across moments I keep referring to in my photos of last year. I had suspected that the Purple Hairstreak was visiting the oaks in our butterfly garden but this was the proof - she just descended from the tree and landed right in front...

Re: Ringlet - Favourite Photo of 2021

This cute aberration was one of many oddities that I stumbled across in my butterfly garden during 2021. I call it the Black Tip Ringlet.

Re: Peacock - Favourite Photo of 2021

These two shots are my favourite Peacock photos of 2021, both taken in my butterfly garden with one showing the almost ghoulish fore-wing only eyes as compared to the absolute brilliance of all four eyes on a freshly emerged specimen. We should not take our more commoner species for granted.

Re: Marsh Fritillary - Favourite Photo of 2021

Yes indeed, David. They are so much more phtographable than the larger Frits and the two Pearl-bordereds. (Have I just invented a word - phtographable???)

Re: Marsh Fritillary - Favourite Photo of 2021

This was one of those wonderful moments when the butterfly just posed for the camera. Despite me getting in close, and she seemingly having finished the job in hand, she remained in situ, totally undisturbed.

Re: A Home For Butterflies

Looking through my photos I came across this one which I feel really captures the feel of our butterfly garden, in the area where the meadow merges into the woodland garden.

Thanks, David. We also saw a very dark, almost black one but it flew off and never returned to be photographed!

Re: Glanville Fritillary - Favourite Photo of 2021

We were in the Isle of Wight in late May just as the weather finally started to pick up, and were rewarded by plentiful sightings of the Glanville Fritillary. I have chosen these two pics because the mating shot depicts their habitat nicely, and the upperside shot is an aberration.

Re: Annual 2021 Competition

These are my three choices for the annual photo competition. Large Skipper mass gathering on tufted vetch at Crowle Moor NR, Lincolnshire. Comma f.hutchinsoni feasting on buddleia lochinch in our butterfly garde. A wonderful contrast of blue and orange with the Common Blue on fox and cubs in our but...

Re: Brown Hairstreak - Favourite Photo of 2021

Two of my favourite Brown Hairstreak photos, both female and both taken in Chambers Farm Wood, Lincolnshire. I particularly like the red berries in the background and the unusual angle of the full wings open shot.

SWF white aberration

On 29.7.21 in our Lincolnshire butterfly garden I stumbled across a brief sighting of a very unusual butterfly, which quickly vanished. The Silver-washed Fritillary has been extending its range in Lincolnshire in recent years, and a few have been seen in the wooded parts of our garden since 2018. Th...

Large Blue aberration

Being new to this site I have a few backlog topics that I would like to post, including these photos of a very dark and dusky female Large Blue seen at Daneway Bank, Gloucestershire on 30.6.21. You will see from the more distant shot that when seen from afar it so easily could have been mistaken for...
