Re: Padfield

Fantastic shot of the WLH cat - A nice surprise for you when you checked your images, I'm sure! I've come across a number of other eggs on elm trees before including something very similar to what you have posted here. The image below was from December 2020, and I believe it's an egg from a moth in ...

Re: Max Anderson

We're up and running with white-letter hairstreaks! One of the eight eggs I'm monitoring hatched last overnight. I checked four eggs yesterday evening, and again today at 13:00. Looking forward to following the development closely over the next few weeks and months! MAX00929.JPG PXL_20210227_1541432...

Re: Max Anderson

I have no experience with black Hairstreak eggs (plenty with Brown Hairstreak which by comparison are like shooting fish in a barrel) but what I do know about them is that you did really well finding that many! :D Thank you! It's difficult to know whether I'm missing something or whether I could be...

Re: Max Anderson

Thanks for your comments Will. Very useful to hear about your observations and experiences. I appreciate the sample sizes aren't going to be very large, but I think it's a good place to start, particularly given how little we know about some of the habits of this butterfly in the UK. I do endeavour ...

Re: Max Anderson

Over the last few months, as well as chasing brown hairstreak eggs, I've also spent a considerable amount of time searching for black hairstreak ( Satyrium pruni ) eggs at Ditchling common (Sussex). This was partly because I had become quite adept at spotting brown hairstreak eggs and fancied a chal...

Brown hairstreak Capture.JPG Capture2.JPG Over the past few months, I’ve been trawling through the old sightings pages for the Sussex BC website from 2006-2020 to extract any records of brown hairstreak from the county. I wanted to learn what we know about the species within the county and to under...

Delighted to see you've started a blog! Very keen to see how things develop. I enjoyed the Nabokov quote, I'm a fan myself - Recieved a copy of Nabokov's blues for Christmas. Fantastic video footage too, nicely done!

I also dropped you a private message..

Re: Max Anderson

Purple emperor From mid-June to early July, I spent many early mornings patrolling the woodland rides in search for the purple emperor, working late into my evenings to make up for lost time. Below is a short account of a few select days from the 2020 season: 16th June 2020 I spent a good 2 hours t...

Re: Max Anderson

Long-tailed blue There has been a fair bit of noise generated by the long-tailed blues at Whitehawk hill (Sussex) over the past few weeks. I thought I would provide my angle on some of the events I was fortunate to observe, in the hope of providing a different perspective. 6th August 2020 After rea...

I thought it would be worth startying a personal diary of my own so that I can share my experiences and photos.

I will aim to put together longer posts on an infrequent basis, rather than posting regularly with findings from a single day.

Hope my posts can be of interest!

This was at Whitehawk hill in Brighton.

Long-tailed blue mating pair (Sussex)

9/9/2020 - Whitehawk Hill A day to remember.. Whilst chasing some pristene individuals for a photo (estimates of 8 or 9 males and 2 females), Neil Hulme told me he had eyes on a male and female a few yards away, and that it looked as though the male was trying to mate. The two flew up and landed on ...

Chin up Trevor, there'll be more opportunities to see PE over the next week or so!

Nice to see the second generation Wood whites out already - photo below (from 25/6) illustrates the fringe hairs quite nicely.

A few shots from a nice sunny, albeit slightly wind, day at Chantry Hill (Sussex), 13/6/2020

A few DGF flying in the wind-sheltered spots, most looking very fresh:

Re: Abberant Duchess.

Any thoughts on whether this is also an ab. leucodes, or whether it's just a worn specimen?
