Re: October 2020

Spotted this today - birthday card from my daughter.

She's very kindly making up for the fact that the everlasting pea i tried to grow to tempt a stray up from Brighton was not a roaring success.

Re: September 2020

Got lucky weather wise with our week away in the very north of Pembrokeshire. Didn't go out specifically looking for butterflies and didn't see many species. 3-4 Speckled Wood, similar Red Admiral, 1 small Copper, 1 Common Blue but Small Tortoiseshells were thankfully everywhere including the beache...

Re: September 2020

Are these all from your garden Deborah ? Bit jealous if so.

Yours does look a lot like a Small Copper - but I've never seen a Sooty Copper (or any other sort of Copper to be honest).

How many species are there in Brittany ?

Re: September 2020

Saw a pretty fresh-looking male Common Blue sitting across the path on my lunchtime wander.

Went back for a stroll after WFH and the Small Coppers were looking great in the low bright light.

I bet our Large Coppers were beautiful in similar light conditions.

Re: September 2020

The Clouded Yellow was a bit more relaxed today (when the sun went in anyway)

Also saw my first blue of any sort for a fair while.

The pair of Small Coppers seemed to be courting. The lower one was rapidly opening and closing its wings in the general direction of the other one who was following.

Re: September 2020

Just noticed that on the 4th picture down, to the "north west" of the hairstreak, there's a brown triangular thing with square-ish white spots on the underside of the leaf. Do you think that's an insect of some kind ? It looks very small though , so was considering possibly a panel of leaf...

Re: September 2020

The colours on that Swallowtail caterpillar are amazing. Very lively Clouded Yellow round our fields today. Would it stop ? Would it heck. Few female Brown Hairstreaks about. This one was the opposite of the CY - it was slow and didn't mind me at all. The Comma was beautiful in that end of summer li...

Re: September 2020

Today we made a visit to a Garden over the border in Sussex ,about an hour from home ,and an area we know fairly well ,ie; Herstmonceux ,when our boys were small we took them to the Science centre ,next door to the castle......... I can thoroughly recommend the Comets and Curry nights at Herstmonce...

Re: September 2020

Very nice location Jack.

I actually did see a Clouded Yellow today on my lunchtime stroll.

But it's fair to say I won't ever see a bottlenose dolphin on one of the wanders from my door - and I'm guessing you might ?

Re: August 2020

I’ll swap you my Convolvulus Hawkmoth for your Brown Hairstreaks Zig Zag - they’re still on my ‘would love to see’ list. And your photos are great! Thanks Deborah.... it was seeing a Brown Hairstreak landing close by me in those fields in early August last year that really ignited my interest in bu...

Re: August 2020

Impressive moth Deborah. Saw my first Brown Hairstreaks in our local fields today for about two and a half weeks. Three females were active along one south-facing blackthorn hedge. Over the long weekend in those fields I've seen no Gatekeepers, one Meadow Brown (yesterday), one each of Comma, Common...

Re: August 2020

Not a lot about in our fields at the moment. On my detox WFH lunchtime walk today I saw 5-6 Small White, 2 Speckled Wood, one very flighty Red Admiral, a Large White, 2-3 male Common Blues, 1 Brown Argus, something very Small Tortoiseshell like that sped past me out into the meadow, 4-5 Meadow Brown...

Re: August 2020

Kitchen visitor earlier tonight. Based on a quick bit of hunting online, I reckon it must be an Orange Swift. Lovely little thing - almost got a furry face at the back of its head. Just noticed, from last pic looks like it's missing a back leg. Weather hasn't been too great round our way for butterf...

Re: August 2020

Firstly - massive thanks to Allan, Matsukaze and Adrian for your help in ID'ing these moths. I get how people can become pretty expert on UK butterflies reasonably quickly as there's not that many of them. Even I've reached the stage where I can bore the family with snippets (on the adults at least ...

Re: August 2020

Great photos of the dragonfly Ian. A lot of instincts come out blurred when I take them - even when they're totally static - so that top picture in flight is a thing of real beauty. I went out in the local fields today to snap those white moths. There were still loads about and I make you 100% corre...

Re: August 2020

Hi Allan, Thanks a lot for that - I will try and get a close up pic over the weekend (weather dependent) - but that could well be it ! They're certainly that shape and with an obvious stripe. I've probably shared most of the moths I've seen in those fields for ID on here, apart from the single one t...

Re: Humber hawker ?

I found this report online, which backs both of you up (p54) in terms of the migrant hawker being the most commonly seen in the area.

So cheers again.

Re: August 2020

I'm seeing a lot of Silver Y and Brimstone moths in my fields Allan, we even had a Silver Y in the kitchen the other day. but I've never seen anything as striking as Jersey Tiger. Every time I do a circuit of the fields this last week or so I'm disturbing very large numbers of small white moths whic...

Re: August 2020

A lovely Female Clouded Yellow, all the ones that flew through Hutchinsons Bank recently were male, so no chance of offspring in a months time from those. Yes - it was lovely. On closer inspection it seems to have a bit of left hind-wing damage, but that didn't stop it shifting. I read on the Susse...
