Covid-19 and Butterflies
The impact of the Covid-19 regulations upon us has been written about. Will there be an impact upon butterflies in a positive or a negative way? As a total novice I would have assumed not but then I start reading about goats and deer invading towns, clearer waters and less pollution in the sky and I...

Re: March 2020
My interest in butterflies only began in August 2019 and I have just experienced my first butterfly-free winter. It is a long period to get through when you are keen to embrace the hobby. With bright sunshine here in South Derbyshire yesterday I felt that the day would yield my first sighting of th...

Re: Virus advice
I totally agree and I couldn't add to what you so eloquently wrote Nick. We are actually fortunate to still be able to pursue this interest / hobby within the Government rules. Think about the number of hobbies that others have that cannot or should not be pursued at present. I have a whole cluster ...

Re: David M
Lovely photos David and it was nice to get some perspective with some photos of your walk. I think my favourite photo was the Peacock in the sand. The Comma on the tree a close second. Knowing that certain species are out is handy for others to know and, in my case, knowing what some actually look l...

Re: March 2020
No Small Tortoiseshells yet! Is anyone else finding them a bit scarce? Reasonably common in South Derbyshire. 32 counted in the last 5 days representing 27% of my butterfly sightings across 4 species. Being a novice that might actually class as being scarce mind you. Brimstone are not so common my ...

Re: Identification Learning Curve
Looking at a lot of Commas close up today I noticed that some were smaller than others and some were light in colour and some dark. I have just been looking online thinking that the colour or the size would be a straightforward way of distinguishing genders. Not so it seems. It all seems a bit perpl...

Re: March 2020
Lovely photos David. Thank you for sharing those. I am now enthused by the possibility that I might see an Orange Tip whilst out. Yesterday there was news of Speckled Woods being seen which lifted my spirits. Surprisingly there were fewer butterflies out today when I went on my Government permitted ...

Re: March 2020
My interest in butterflies started in August 2019 and I didn't see a solitary Peacock. They had perhaps settled down for winter early. I saw one today and I was absolutely delighted. However, my joy was short lived. I watched it fly for 2 seconds maximum until it flew straight in to a spiders web an...

Re: March 2020
Interesting to note your sighting and photograph of a Speckled Wood Vince. The woodlands near to my house were full of them last year. However, I have not seen one yet and I spent a long time in the woods yesterday and today. I am heartened by the fact that perhaps tomorrow I might see one. Thank yo...

Re: Virus advice
...Another important thing to consider is the absence of televised live sport. For huge numbers of people, this is a principal interest in their lives... As someone who doesn't have a television and has no interest whatever in football, I personally find this aspect mystifying. (I have been known t...

Re: David M
Lovely photos David. I was interested to read that lepidopterists tend to neglect Commas. Whilst I have not seen many butterfly species to date, I would class them as my favourite so far.

Re: March 2020
Fantastic photos. Thank you for sharing.
My tally of 1 butterfly for 2020 increased to 4 today with the sighting of 3 Brimstones. All 3 were very purposefully flying to wherever they had decided they wanted to be and did not stop to say hello to my camera.

Re: Identification Learning Curve
Thank you once again for taking the time to provide me with your written advice and guidance. Ultimately I do think that knowing next to nothing is actually part of the excitement for me. I have a lot to learn but that learning will be extremely enjoyable. I embraced this hobby in mid-August of 2019...
