Accurate Forecasting

What do you use online for a fairly accurate forecast of the weather? Is there any anything that is good for: a) an hour by hour forecast on the day? b) advance forecasts for a week ahead? I always use BBC and find that for the hour by hour daily forecasts they are good at forecasting poor weather b...

Re: April 2024

Target species were Green Hairstreak, an the 1st location produced 5 of the little green jewels. Those Green Hairstreak photos are too good for words TM. If I had taken those I would have run around the field with my shirt over my head and taken a booking for throwing my shirt in to the crowd after...

I think that there has been an unauthorised release of butterflies from my sites in to yours Dave.

I look at your thread with the classic line from Bullseye in my mind. 'Chris, let's have a look at what you could have won'

Re: David M

Lovely photos David. I particularly like the Peacock in the sand as that is a lesser seen backdrop for a butterfly photo and it is a nice pristine specimen too.

I can feel your despair with the weather and your spiritual starvation in the words that you type.

Re: Earlier and earlier

You asked for comments outside of the climate change box Jack. I agree with a lot of what David wrote too. Undeniably many flowers and insects are appearing earlier year on year. This year I saw a ridiculously early Cowslip and a few absurdly early Bee Flies. The buddleia and hydrangea in my garden ...

Absolutely fantastic pristine Speckled Wood photos Neil. I particularly like the two together.

Does anyone, without fail, always think Whitesnake when we have Neil photos from Coverdale?

That said, do not hesitate to report genuinely offensive posts that might have slipped through. I do occasionally remove spam and offensive stuff (often before the UK has woken up, as I'm an hour ahead!), and I know the other moderators do too; but I don't systematically check every post. Re: Neil Hulme

I have written before about my eagerness to see a snake in the wild in my lifetime. You wrote Neil how finding someone from a local reptile society might be advantageous. Lo and behold I receive an unexpected email inviting me to a guided newt, frog and toad walk by the Derbyshire Amphibian and Rept...

Re: Neil Hulme

Sadly, the current trend means that it will become increasingly rare for our kids to enjoy such spectacles in the British countryside. You wrote of the decline in snakes being the current trend Neil. I guess one could add to that the current trend for the child species preferring to be indoors with...

Early April, Small Copper  I feel like South Derbyshire is a different country to Kent, not just a different county.

Re: Neil Freeman

Great photos Neil. I have yet to see Speckled Wood or Orange Tip this year but as we are in the same butterfly time zone, this suggests that they are out there. Maybe today, when I have finished eating my all day breakfast :)

Re: Awesome

The first ever sighting that sticks in my mind is that of Brown Hairstreak. It was August 2010 and the first year I'd really got back into butterflies. I was at West Wiilliamston in Pembrokeshire and had spent an hour fruitlessly walking around searching for this butterfly, largely because I didn't...

Re: Awesome

I have told this one before but perhaps worth repeating. I was flying in a gliding competition and unable to stay airborne.  I landed at Martlesham Heath disused airfield near Ipswich and had my first ever meeting with Essex Skippers. Another gliding adventure was somewhere near Silverstone.   Wood...

Monday 8th April (continued) - the afternoon. I stood still and extended my arm - and the butterfly succumbed to the temptation to add this new "tree" to its territory and landed on my hand. I like that Dave, the thought that an arm might be a tree and become a bit of territory.

It has been a year since I have seen an Orange Tip and I thought this specimen was particular orange and bold in that department. I did a search on Google to check and found that they all look like this. The mind plays tricks.
