Re: May 2020
Spent a rewarding morning in the Forest of Dean photographing Wood Whites. Many thanks to David M for his directions, they were spot on and I connected almost immediately on arrival at site. Also managed a ropey record shot of a Small Pearl-bordered Frit. IMG_9160 (2).JPG IMG_9144 (2).JPG IMG_9119 (...

Cinderford Linear Park
Hi all. I'm considering a visit over the border to Linear Park, Cinderford, in the next week or so with the hope of connecting with Wood White and Small P B Fritillary. Rather than wander around aimlessly, as I believe it's a large area to cover, does anybody who knows this site have any tips as to ...
Re: May 2020
Another productive morning up on Cotley Hill. Good numbers of Small Blue along with Adonis and Common. Grizzled and Dingy Skippers also well represented plus Marsh Frits and Brown Argus. A supporting cast of Green Hairstreaks and Small Heaths added to the interest. IMG_8580 (2).JPG IMG_8734 (2).JPG ...
Re: May 2020
Wow! Large Skippers already? Summer is almost upon us! Accordingly to our county recorder it's the first very early Large Skipper of the year and the third earliest ever for Wiltshire. The earliest was on 6 May 1893 from the Marlborough College reports (a very early hot season for several species) ...
Re: May 2020
That's one helluva find, Stevie. Well done. Thanks David. I actually flushed it yesterday so was pleasantly surprised to find it at the same roosting post this morning. This time I was ready for it! :D Other butterflies at the same site this afternoon included my first Large Skipper of the year. IM...
Re: May 2020
Much better weather this morning meant lots of fresh Marsh Frits, Adonis Blues, Brown Argus and Small Heaths.
An added bonus was finding this fella roosting amongst all of the butterflies

Re: May 2020
Quite productive this morning despite being overcast and chilly! Nice to get out and drive somewhere for a change. It's clear that Marsh Fritillaries don't do social distancing!

Different walk but same restrictions so the usual suspects, although I did get my first Common Blue. Speckled Wood 6, Small Tortoiseshell 1, Small White 5, Large White 6, Peacock 7, Green-veined White 8, Orange-tip ♀1/♂5, Brimstone ♀3/♂3, Red Admiral 1, Common Blue 1. Re: May 2020
With the sun making an effort so did I and headed out on my isolation walk. Good numbers of Small and Green-veined White. Orange-tips still being frisky and a single Large White and Peacock made up the tally. IMG_7767 (2).JPG IMG_7765 (2).JPG IMG_7764 (2).JPG IMG_7753 (2).JPG IMG_7660 (2).JPG IMG_76...

Speckled Wood
I find it very difficult to identify male & female Speckled Wood. Could someone kindly tell if these are either male or female. Plus any tips for future reference?
Many thanks.

Re: April 2020
Usual 'isolation' walk this lunchtime. Numbers starting to decline now so may have to wander further afield!

Re: April 2020
The usual suspects on my walk today. I wish I could go further afield and get the Grizzles and Green 'streaks but alas not to be.
